Mind Training Teachings LJ37: The Four Attachments by Sakya Pandita The Four Attachments by Sakya Pandita The Four Attachments by Sakya Pandita. Homage to the feet of the venerable Lama! In general, having obtained a body with leisure and opportunity, encountering the precious teachings of the Buddha, and generating unbiased wisdom, one must practice a single, non-inverted Dharma. For this, one must practice the Four Attachments. What are they? Do not be attached to this life, do not be attached to the three realms of samsara, do not be attached to one's own benefit, and do not be attached to things and characteristics. Specifically, this life is like a water bubble, and since there is no certainty when one will die, it is not worth being attached to. These three realms of samsara are like a poisonous fruit, which is sweet at first but ultimately brings harm. Those who are attached to it are mistaken. Being attached to one's own benefit is like raising an enemy's child, which is happy at first but ultimately brings harm to oneself. Therefore, even if being attached to one's own benefit is comfortable at first, one will ultimately go to the lower realms. If one is attached to things and characteristics, it is like mistaking a mirage for water, which appears to be water at first but cannot be drunk. Although this samsara appears to a deluded mind, if examined with wisdom, there is nothing that exists by its own nature. Therefore, do not place your mind on the past, do not place your mind on the future, and do not place your consciousness on the present. Understanding this, one should know that all dharmas are free from elaboration. By doing so, because one is not attached to this life, one will not be born in the lower realms; because one is not attached to the three realms of samsara, one will not be born in samsara; because one is not attached to one's own benefit, one will not be born as a Shravaka or Pratyekabuddha; because one is not attached to things and characteristics, one will quickly attain perfect enlightenment. The Four Attachments is the non-inverted intention of the great Sakya Pandita. Composed by Sakya Pandita, it is complete. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
