Mind Training Teachings Collection LJ14: The Dharma of Taking Afflictions as the Path 1-186 The Dharma of Taking Afflictions as the Path Homage to the precious Guru! It is said that the secret instruction on training the path by relying on the two aspects of Bodhicitta (Enlightenment Mind) with strong thoughts of attachment and aversion, from the Mantras, explains how to take afflictions as the path. Afflictions themselves cannot become the path. Focusing on afflictions and transforming them through reversal is also extensively taught in the Sutras. The instruction for this is as follows: First, taking attachment as an example, when one sees attachment arising in one's own mind or towards an object, one should recognize this as the affliction of attachment. If it is not abandoned, not trained, and not subdued, it will generate immeasurable suffering in the lower realms and so on. If it is trained and subdued, it will become the cause of perfect Buddhahood. One should think, 'I will subdue this and make it the cause of perfect Buddhahood.' Then, one takes the affliction of attachment, which is like an enemy, into one's own mind. Then, like cultivating loving-kindness, one expands its scope. Finally, one takes all the latent attachments of all sentient beings onto oneself. Having taken them, one contemplates one's own attachment as vast as one can conceive. One contemplates that all sentient beings are free from attachment and have attained perfect Buddhahood. 1-187 This is the conventional Bodhicitta. One's own attachment, as large as a mountain, is taken by one's own mind. One also takes on the attachment of others. The essence of attachment is also the mind. There is not even a particle separate from the mind. When the mind looks at the mind, the past and future minds have ceased and have not arisen, so they do not exist. The present mind is free from any form or characteristic, and it does not exist as any entity, remaining like the sky. The name 'attachment' exists, but in reality, there is nothing to be found. One should remain in that state as long as possible. This is the ultimate Bodhicitta. Through these two, in sequence, the Dharmakaya (Body of Dharma), which abandons all afflictions, habitual tendencies, and negative karma, arises, and merely hearing the name of the Rupakaya (Body of Form) pacifies afflictions. Similarly, one should know that this applies to all afflictions such as hatred. This is written without adding or subtracting from the Guru's words. May the merit of the extremely profound secret instruction on taking afflictions as the path be as vast as the sky!
