Mind Training Teachings Collection LJ11: Dharma for Subduing Negative Thoughts in One's Own Mind-Stream from 'Stages of a Bodhisattva's Mind Training' 1-175 Dharma for Subduing Negative Thoughts in One's Own Mind-Stream from 'Stages of a Bodhisattva's Mind Training' Dharma for Subduing Negative Thoughts in One's Own Mind-Stream from 'Stages of a Bodhisattva's Mind Training'. Not clinging to self-interest, therefore not falling into the Hinayana view; not bound by the prison of samsara, I prostrate to that liberation. 'I' is a deceptive word, 'need' is a flattering term, 'not other' is a hostile word, 'no need' is a word of obstruction, 'self and other' is a term of separation, 'attachment and aversion' are the source of conflict. Who makes such distinctions? That person has deviated from the profound Dharma. If a wise person wishes to subdue the enemy, first they should despise the difference between 'I' and 'self'. No matter who slanders you, do not respond with harsh words. No matter who harms you, do not argue or retort. Even if you lose your life and possessions, think that it is due to your past actions, and especially console yourself. No matter if you are cursed by evil spirits and demons, do not be consumed by anger, you should satisfy others' minds. For those you are unwilling to give up, such as loved ones, even if they are taken away by relatives in the name of love, you should console yourself and not be angry. When a benefactor repays kindness with malice, do not be angry even for a moment, you should remember their kindness and strive to be patient. Now I will explain the method of abandoning sins, distinguishing them without anger. For this, you should cultivate loving-kindness and compassion, and blame yourself. Before you have attained patience, you should associate with evil-natured people, try to find objects and causes, think about the faults of samsara, and generate even greater compassion. 1-176 Live in simple dwellings, caves, under cliffs, dilapidated and leaky houses, temples, livestock pens, wilderness, and unpleasant valleys. At this time, consciousness will feel displeased, if you live in a valley you want to go to the mountains, and you don't want to stay there, longing for warmth, shelter, and corners. Constantly changing dwellings, when consciousness feels displeased and weary, you should blame yourself like this: 'Your behavior is so bad, this kind of dwelling is already good.' Your mind is like this, everything is still going smoothly. Otherwise, with your patience, it is very lucky that you have not fallen into hell! It is very lucky that you have not experienced burning! It is very lucky that you have not been born in the city of hunger and thirst in the preta realm! It is very lucky that you have not been born in the city of unclean rakshasas, it is very lucky that you have not been born in a huge mud pit!

Wandering and drifting! Great lord, unborn in the kalpa! Furthermore, contemplate intensely on all fears, Use the whip of shame to urge yourself to practice the Dharma. Practice frugality in food, engage in asceticism; Strive for simplicity in clothing, be content with humility. Abandon comfort and enjoyment, cultivate antidotal practices. Abandon all actions, rely on the state of non-action. Transform whatever you do into a companion for Bodhi. The mind-training essence, from the stages of a Bodhisattva's conduct, is the complete method for thoroughly subduing one's own bad habits. Thus, it is complete. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
