Collected Teachings of Rudam Gyatso LG34 The Debate of Dreams 3-90 The Debate of Dreams The Debate of Dreams. The title is not very clear. On the eighth day of the second month of the Tiger year, in the middle of the night, in a clear and bright vision, many monks were gathered debating, and I went too. A Gelug monk named Tön Zang (meaning 'Benefit Manifest'), who had a good physique and was said to be a scholar proficient in the ten treatises, I intended to debate with him, so I said gently: 'This knowable object, is the nature of being made, therefore it is the valid reason establishing that sound is impermanent.' He said: 'Accept whether you want to or not.' 'Then, birth is also a valid reason establishing that sound is impermanent, because it is the nature of being made.' He said: 'Accept the nature of being made whether you want to or not.' 'Then, the Pudgala (Sanskrit: Pudgala, meaning 'person') who becomes the valid reason establishing that sound is impermanent with the nature of being made, and the Pudgala who becomes the valid reason establishing that sound is impermanent with birth, these two should have a common basis, because all those you admitted before are the same.' Regarding the nature of being made, he also said: 'Accept whether you want to or not.' 'Then, by relying on establishing the nature of being made as the valid reason establishing that sound is impermanent, the Pudgala who becomes the subsequent inference (Sanskrit: Anumāna, meaning 'inference') with the valid reason that realizes sound is impermanent, and by relying on establishing birth as the valid reason establishing that sound is impermanent, the Pudgala who becomes the subsequent inference with the valid reason that realizes sound is impermanent, these two should have a common basis, because...' 3-91 Regarding the nature of being made, he also said: 'Accept whether you want to or not.' After that, the other party seemed to have found the certainty of refutation, so he tried his best to use reason and said: 'The Pudgala who has such a common basis, you should not be the Pudgala of the subsequent inference who arises from establishing the nature of being made as the valid reason establishing that sound is impermanent and realizes sound is impermanent, because you should be the Pudgala of the subsequent inference who arises from establishing birth as the valid reason establishing that sound is impermanent and realizes sound is impermanent.' It seems necessary to say 'non-pervasive' to the nature of being made. To this, many things I wanted to say came to my mind clearly, so I said: 'The Pudgala who has such a common basis, in your view, both the nature of being made and birth simultaneously establish the valid reason that sound is impermanent, because in your view, establishing that sound is impermanent, these two are indeed established as valid reasons, but these two are not established sequentially.' It seems necessary to say 'the first one is not established'. Because, in your view, establishing that sound is impermanent, the nature of being made is established as a valid reason. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because in your presence, the 'arising' that is used to prove that sound is impermanent is also a valid reason. Because of 'being made' (created), the opponent had to bow their head and concede, entering a state of silence. If the opponent says that the initial argument is not established, then the reason is: you rely on 'being made' as a valid reason to prove that sound is impermanent. Because you are a person who generates an inferential cognition with a valid reason from the understanding that 'sound is impermanent'. The second reason is similar to this, and both reasons are directly contradictory. If one wants to present the root cause all at once, then: Sakya Pandita said, 'For one thing to be proven, there are many reasons. Even if there is debate, there are not too many reasons. The former reason is not a true reason, it is a place to refute. The latter reason is a true reason, it is a place to refute.' This statement is unreasonable.' That is what is to be said. If the latter reason, presented sequentially, is not established, then, as the subject, in your mind, from the reason of 'being made' arises the inferential cognition with the reason of understanding sound as impermanent, and from the reason of 'arising' arises the inferential cognition with the reason of proving sound as impermanent, these two arise sequentially, because you think so. If you admit it, then the person who generates the inferential cognition with the reason of proving sound as impermanent from the reason of 'being made' is also the person who generates the inferential cognition with the reason of proving sound as impermanent from the reason of 'arising', and these two have a common basis. If you admit it, then, such a person, as the subject, you must be a person who has generated the inferential cognition with the reason of understanding sound as impermanent, because you are a person who has generated the inferential cognition with the reason of proving sound as impermanent from the reason of 'being made', this is a real reason. If you admit it, then this is not established, because you are a person who is about to generate the inferential cognition with the reason of proving sound as impermanent, because you are a person who is about to generate the inferential cognition with the reason of understanding sound as impermanent from the reason of 'arising', this is a real reason. If there is someone who prides themselves on being a rational thinker not deluded by sleep, please consider how to answer! Even in dreams, the real, powerful, and pure reason dawns in my heart. I wonder if I have been directly blessed by Manjushri --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
