The Eighteenth Volume of the Instructions Treasury, The Common Preliminary Practices for a Hundred Instructions. The Eighteenth Volume of the Instructions Treasury The Common Preliminary Practices for a Hundred Instructions The Common Preliminary Practices for a Hundred Instructions Conclude. Om, May there be well-being, accomplishment!). I respectfully prostrate to the Guru and the Protector Manjushri. Neither too much nor too little, surpassing limits, the number of one hundred and eight, As many as the numbers, well-transmitted in order, A portion that clarifies the nature of the Paramitas, I write the common preliminary practices, summarizing just a portion. That is, a summary of the essential points that precede the common practices of all one hundred instructions. All refuges are gathered into the Guru, And believing that he is of one essence with the root Guru, Thinking that obtaining the difficult-to-find leisure and endowments is meaningful, And contemplating that even that does not remain for long, examining the nature of death and impermanence, With compounded things being of the nature of disintegration, generating even more renunciation and weariness, Remembering that the eight worldly concerns, the means of livelihood in this life, do not even arise in dreams, Gathering that very awareness into the essence of practice, In the face of delusion, Primarily taming the co-emergent ego that holds the actor and the one who experiences the ripening as one, With firm certainty that the results of black and white karma are infallible, without slighting even the slightest acceptance and rejection of virtue and vice, following Afterwards, striving in the practice of a person of small capacity, And deciding that all the contaminated pleasures, all the glories of samsara, are merely images of happiness that are remedies for suffering, With the thought of definitely arising from all of samsara, Based on the ethics that one has taken and that are present in one's own mindstream, with the three, hearing, thinking, and meditating, diligently following and practicing without sectarianism towards all the scriptures of the Victorious Ones, practicing as one should practice as a person of medium capacity, Finally, generating loving-kindness by knowing all beings pervading space as kind parents, with the superior intention of cherishing others more than oneself, Transforming whatever one does solely into the benefit of others, relative Bodhicitta, and, Like the samadhi of the sky, realizing that all phenomena of samsara and nirvana have no inherent existence whatsoever that can withstand examination. Like the after-attainment of illusion, realizing that whatever appears is like an illusion, appearing but without inherent existence, reciting mantras, meditating, walking, moving, lying down
