The Tenth Volume of the Instructions Treasury. A teaching manual on the Great Seal of Four Letters, originating from the Tsurphu Kagyu lineage. The Tenth Volume of the Instructions Treasury. A teaching manual on the Great Seal of Four Letters, originating from the Tsurphu Kagyu lineage. A teaching manual on the Great Seal of Four Letters, originating from the Tsurphu Kagyu lineage. Finished. and, cutting off the wrong paths of the mind, and showing the way to carry the mind, these four. First, examine where the nature of mind comes from, where it stays in the middle, and where it goes in the end. The result is that there is no place of origin, because it does not arise from cause and condition, so it is originally empty, completely devoid of anything. There is no place to stay in the middle, because it is not composed of shape and color, so it is a flowing emptiness, an appearing emptiness. There is no place to go in the end, because there is no trace of going here, so it is a flowing self-liberation, a self-pacification. Therefore, this nature of mind, because it does not create a causal ground in the beginning, will not be destroyed by conditions in the end. Because it does not arise suddenly, there is no increase or decrease of emptiness. Because it pervades all appearances and existences, it is not partial. Because it is not composed of things and characteristics, this uncharacteristic thing will not stop no matter what, and will not form no matter what, so it transcends the extremes of existence and non-existence, permanence and annihilation. Because the three times do not change, there is no clarity or obscurity in birth and death. Because its nature is originally pure, it is not defiled by the faults of samsara, the nature of mind is originally Buddha. Second, the method of abiding is shown, and there are six methods for constantly not abiding in the mind: like a great garuda soaring in the sky, abide in the uncorrected natural state, without effort or practice. Like the ocean without waves, abide without mental movement. Like the sun without clouds, abide in being full of all clarity. Like a child looking at a temple, abide in the clarity not ceasing, but without grasping. Like the waves of water, abide in knowing all arising feelings. Like a bird flying in the sky, abide in the awareness without trace. Third, there are three ways to cut off the wrong paths of the mind: hoping for Buddhahood upwards is a wrong path, so be sure that there is no other Buddha apart from the mind. Craving samsara downwards is a wrong path, so be sure that there are no other sentient beings apart from one's own conceptual thoughts. Attachment to appearances in the middle is a wrong path, so be sure that all appearances are like dreams and illusions. Inner experience

If you cling to the mundane, you will stray from the path, so be certain that Mahamudra does not need to be cultivated in the mind. If you despise the results of karma, you will stray from the path, so be certain that, apart from conceptual thoughts, karma will not deceive you. The fourth is the instruction on how to carry the mind on the path: There are six continuous yogas of conduct: the yoga of increasing appearances during the day, the yoga of taking desirable objects as companions at noon and night, the yoga of gathering the senses into the base in the evening, the yoga of placing knowledge into the vase at midnight, the yoga of increasing the clarity of awareness at dawn, and the yoga of completely releasing wisdom at the time of death. The yoga of increasing appearances during the day is: Increase all appearances in this way as the delusion of the mind. Because delusion has no nature, increase it as dreams and illusions. Because illusions have nothing to grasp, increase it as emptiness. The yoga of taking desirable objects as companions at noon and night is: Whatever you eat and drink, enjoy emptiness in emptiness. Enjoy it in the way that the nature of reality dissolves into the nature of reality. Enjoy and use it with the thought of offering it to the lama and the yidam deity. The yoga of gathering the senses into the base in the evening is: Stare intently at whatever thoughts and deluded memories arise during the day. The yoga of placing knowledge into the vase at midnight is: Meditate on the lama in the center of the heart. Gather the root of thoughts into the state of the nature of reality. Meditate on the lama on the crown of the head during the day, entrust awareness to it, and fall asleep, and clear light will arise. The yoga of increasing the clarity of awareness at dawn is: Analyze and explain the general teachings and your own mind. In particular, increase the experience of awareness through the profound instructions of the lama. The yoga of completely releasing wisdom at the time of death is: At the time of death, the yogi should completely cut off attachment to all phenomena. In reality, be certain that the mind has no birth or death, and that Mahamudra does not need to be cultivated. By remaining without distraction, the mind will be completely released, and you will attain Buddhahood without the bardo. The Four-Letter Mahamudra is complete. This is from the teachings of Nubchen Jangchub Dorje, the great translator of Khro, from the "One Hundred Instructions."
