Fifth, the chapter on transcending effort, accomplishment, cause, and effect. Fifth, the chapter on transcending effort, accomplishment, cause, and effect. The nature of mind is the essence of bodhicitta, without view to contemplate, without conduct to practice, without fruit to achieve, without paths to traverse, without mandalas to create, without recitations or completion stages, without empowerments to bestow, without vows to uphold. In the spontaneously perfect, pure dharma nature from the beginning, the sudden, gradual effort of cause and effect transcends the dharma. This is the essence of bodhicitta, like the sun unobscured by clouds and darkness, not suddenly arising, but naturally clear in the expanse. Whatever ten dharmas of effort and accomplishment are taught, are spoken in the face of sudden delusion arising from skill. Gradual effort is the means of entering through the stages of faculties. The meaning of Atiyoga Vajra Essence is not taught as it is to the yogi. For those individuals who gradually enter with effort, in order to lead them into the primordial expanse of dharma nature, the vehicles of Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas are taught, the stages of the three lesser vehicles. Kriya, Upayoga, and Yoga are the three aspects. The three middling ones are accomplished by the natural unfolding of their own nature. Maha (Sanskrit, Mahā, महान, Great), Anu (Sanskrit, Anu, अणु, Subtle), Ati (Sanskrit, Ati, अति, Transcendent) are the three aspects. The three great ones are apparent from the beginning. By opening the door of the dharma of the cause and effect vehicle, fortunate beings are led to the three enlightenments. Ultimately, all must enter the meaning of Vajra Essence, therefore this great secret is wondrous. The supreme, unchanging, clear light at the peak of all is known as the vehicle of the essence of manifest enlightenment. Among the two dharmas, there is acceptance and rejection, effort and action. It is taught to purify the habitual tendencies of mind and mental events, which arise as the playful display of skill. These are considered the purification of wisdom from the mind. The great dharma without acceptance, rejection, effort, or action is the essence of self-arisen wisdom, the nature of bodhicitta, without wavering from the direct, present state, it is manifested, so there is no need to strive elsewhere. Remaining in oneself, one does not seek elsewhere. This is the very meaning of the nature of the sun. Remaining in itself, the clear light remains unmoving. The other is the effort and accomplishment of dispelling clouds and darkness, like teaching that the sun initially needs to be created. Therefore, the difference between these two is like heaven and earth. Nowadays, those elephants who boast of being Ati, mistake the fluctuating conceptual thoughts for bodhicitta. All this ignorance is a pit of darkness.

And, for the meaning of the self-existing Great Perfection, if you do not even know the capacity and what arises from the capacity, what need is there to speak of the essence of bodhicitta? Here, the primordially pure bodhicitta, the truth of the dharmata of ultimate reality, is the Prajnaparamita that is beyond speech and thought. Naturally unmoving, self-luminous, and primordially free from the elaborations of movement and diffusion, it is called the essence, like the heart of the sun. Its capacity is the unceasing manner of appearance, the clear awareness that is free from both conceptualization and analysis, clearly manifest yet without grasping or fixation. The awareness that arises from the capacity is the mind of elaboration, which generates grasping and fixation, with various habitual tendencies. The five objects that are grasped as objects in the absence of objects, and the five afflictions that grasp self in the absence of self, all the illusions of the outer and inner worlds, which appear as samsara, also arise from the capacity. The very appearance that is misunderstood and wrongly grasped, from where has it come, and where has it not gone, and where does it not abide? In the vast expanse of dharmata, through realization, the three realms are liberated. This is the teaching of Ati Lhundrup Dorje Nyingpo, which arises from the vast expanse of Kuntuzangpo. For the essence of the completely pure bodhicitta, there is no object of viewing, nor is there a dharma to be viewed. There is not even a particle of viewer or viewed. There is no mind of meditation, nor is there a dharma to be meditated upon. Action and activity are non-dual and spontaneously accomplished, so there is not even a particle of fruit to be attained. For a non-existent dharma, there is no place to travel, so there is no path to be traversed. Because it is already accomplished as the great luminous bindu, there is no mandala of generation and dissolution of conceptual thoughts, no mantra and recitation, empowerment and samaya. There is no completion stage, such as the stages of dissolution, that is without focus. For the already accomplished body and wisdom, there are no compounded, sudden, or causal causes and effects. If these exist, it is not self-existing wisdom. Because it is compounded, it is subject to destruction. What then does "spontaneously accomplished and uncompounded" signify? Therefore, in the essence of ultimate reality, it transcends cause and effect, and there are no ten aspects of self-nature. Without effort or practice, this is the true meaning of mind itself. May you know that all elaborations of existence and non-existence are pacified. From the Treasury of Dharmadhatu, the fifth chapter: Transcending Effort, Practice, Cause, and Effect.
