The Fifteenth Chapter: Thinking About the Nature of Faith. The Fifteenth Chapter: Thinking About the Nature of Faith. Having realized the nature of impermanence in this way, generate the army of faith that is cherished as the only one. The faith of desire makes choices about cause and effect, the faith of aspiration makes the mind focus on the supreme object, the faith of respect is endowed with the best of mindfulness, the faith of purity makes the mind extremely clear about qualities, the faith of trust exhausts doubts about the Dharma, the faith of conviction is especially devoted to the supreme Dharma of hearing, thinking, and meditating. The nature of faith is like good earth, it is the basis of all Dharmas, and it makes the accumulation of virtue increase. Faith is like a ship, it crosses the river of existence, like a ferryman, it protects from demons and afflictions, like a vehicle, it leads to the island of liberation, like a jewel king, it accomplishes whatever is desired, like a hero, it subdues sins. It is the supreme wealth of the holy ones who accumulate merit. Those without fortune have no faith at all, and their faults are extremely limitless. Like a stone at the bottom of the sea, they are far from the shore of liberation, like a rudderless boat, there is no time to be freed from existence, like a person with a severed arm, there is no share of virtue, like a burnt seed, there is no sprout of enlightenment, like a blind person, there is no appearance of Dharma images, like being trapped in a whirlpool, they wander in samsara forever. The six places where white Dharma faith arises are: the faith of desire arises from weariness of existence, the faith of aspiration arises from weariness of bad friends, the faith of respect arises from weariness of this life, the faith of purity arises from supreme objects, the faith of trust arises from hearing about cause and effect, the faith of conviction arises from hearing and thinking. Relying on causes to increase upwards also means relying on holy ones, associating with virtuous friends, looking at sutras and tantras, thinking about death, believing in karmic results, and striving more than before in hearing, thinking, and meditating. From this, faith will surely increase. The causes of decline are perceiving the faults of the lama, associating with ordinary people, indulging in desirable qualities at will, laziness and idleness, and many worldly activities. These and other non-Dharma activities are said to be blessed by demons and decline at that time. What arises at the time of arising from conditions is seeing the changes of birth and death, and being afflicted by diseases and evil spirits, suffering befalling, and hearing the Dharma, hearing the biographies of predecessors, and seeing Jataka tales, etc.

From what causes does life continue? Always contemplate the supreme faith. Its measure is renouncing samsara and respecting the Three Jewels. Diligently pursue listening, thinking, and seeking meaning, cherishing and protecting the three trainings. Rejoice in virtue and be extremely cautious of sin. Regard those who have attained higher qualities as models. If faith is not generated through seeking methods, goodness and excellence will not be achieved, and one will forever wander in samsara. Therefore, relying on whatever, one should strive to find ways to generate faith. Knowing and abandoning the faults of faith, is only possible in the presence of the holy, and not through anything other than faith. It can increase or decrease with slight causes, and with the removal of bad causes, faith will be completely gone. A mind with many thoughts engages in everything but cannot endure, one who is not focused and acts as he pleases, without reliance, reckless and easily swayed by small things. Abandon these six and constantly maintain a focused mind. First, thoroughly examine the objects of faith, and then be unchangeable like Mount Meru, without increase or decrease like the sun, sky, and ocean, like a bowstring that is neither too tight nor too loose. Like a bridge without weariness, like the great flow of a river without interruption, like a silk rope that is soft and resilient, rely on it like the sky that cannot be taken away by conditions. The benefits of faith are immeasurable, it is the basis of all white dharma and eliminates suffering. It becomes a profound vessel that guides to enlightenment, praised by the holy and endowed with perfect qualities. Therefore, virtuous individuals who aspire to be like the holy, should diligently cultivate the thousand-petaled lotus of faith. From the Great Vehicle's instruction manual, "The Wish-Fulfilling Treasure," the fifteenth chapter, "Thinking About the Nature of Faith," is complete.
