The Fourteenth Chapter: Thinking About the Impermanence of Life The Fourteenth Chapter: Thinking About the Impermanence of Life Thus, having obtained the difficult-to-find leisure and endowment, it is, in an instant, impermanent and of the nature of destruction. The nature of the three realms is illusory and deceptive. Like this, adorned with the wealth of the four continents, the world of vessels and beings is an example of impermanence and destruction. Understand that the body is like a bubble or a hailstone. All beings who walk on this earth now will surely be gone in a hundred years. Since all who are born die in succession, contemplate that my life is passing and will surely end in death. Like the gathering and dispersal of people from all directions in marketplaces, crossroads, inns, and dwellings, think from the heart that what gathers must disperse. Like the cities that are rich in enjoyment and wealth that become empty and nonexistent, accumulation ends, and wealth is impermanent and without essence, so do not be attached to anything. Like the wealth of heavenly cities that is supremely high, but after death, one falls into the lower realms, do not be arrogant and conceited when you are wealthy. Because of the changes of the four seasons, both internal and external, and the changes of age, abandon the clinging to permanence, knowing that death is certain and impermanent. Form is like particles, time is like a moment, and like lightning in the sky, it is impermanent. Therefore, quickly strive to practice the sacred Dharma. The various vessels and beings are changing and moving, and like a magic trick or a tree on water, they are without essence. Therefore, this samsara, called impermanent, has no one who has taken it as their own and then abandoned it. Because the four elements are combined, the vessels and beings are of a destructive nature, and the city of sentient beings that is moving becomes old. Because it is gathered by the four limits, there is nothing permanent. Since life is uncertain and there is no certainty when one will die, think from the heart that one will surely die. At the time of death, dwelling and enjoyment, and relatives, bravery, talents, armies, and retinues, etc., are of no help, so practice the excellent Dharma. Like the travelers in the marketplace, the trees by the river, the thunder, the clouds, and the movement of the sun and moon, think of the impermanent movement and the swiftness of death. At the time of death, the refuge is the Three Jewels and the accumulation of virtue. Rely on the Lama and strive to accomplish the meaning of essence. Always remember the meaning of death in all activities of walking, standing, sitting, and lying down. The measure of familiarity is seeing the destruction of all compounded things, diligent, fearful, and life.
