Thirteenth Chapter: Thinking About the Difficulty of Obtaining Leisure and Endowment Thirteenth Chapter: Thinking About the Difficulty of Obtaining Leisure and Endowment After being adorned with the sacred teachings, one must cultivate the wisdom of contemplation in one's mind. That is, all the meanings of what has been heard, especially the objects of contemplation, are five in number. First, contemplating the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowment is: turning away from the eight unfree states, being born as a human, having complete faculties, being born in a land with Dharma, awakening good karma, not committing extreme deeds, having faith in the abiding of the Dharma, and having many virtuous friends who uphold the Dharma are extremely rare. First, contemplating the difficulty of obtaining freedom from the eight unfree states: hell beings, hungry ghosts, animals, long-lived gods, barbarians, wrong views, the absence of Buddhas, and mutes are the eight who cannot become vessels of the Dharma. The turmoil of the five poisons, ignorance, and being possessed by demons, laziness, and evil deeds like a raging ocean, being controlled by others, fearing protection, and pretending to be Dharma are the eight types of unfree states caused by sudden circumstances. Turning away from the path of liberation, not being a vessel of the Dharma, acting perversely, being bound and entangled, behaving extremely badly, not fearing samsara, having no faith at all, not doing good deeds, committing sins, having no desire for the Dharma, breaking vows and commitments, and the eight types of unfree states caused by nihilistic views. Being far from the Dharma extinguishes the lamp of liberation. Because we have not been born in these places, we should generate joy and practice the supreme Dharma. Seeing only the bodies of sentient beings, obtaining a human body is like obtaining a universal monarch. Among human bodies, having a faithful Dharma lineage is even rarer, like obtaining Buddhahood. Therefore, one should always contemplate leisure and endowment. Similarly, having incomplete limbs, being born in a borderland, having no ability for Dharma, committing extreme deeds, not believing in Dharma, and being a friend of sin. There are extremely many of these, and one should contemplate them repeatedly. Not becoming these, obtaining a body with Dharma, one must contemplate this day and night. Fully possessing the resources to practice Dharma also indicates the awakening of good karma. Being born as a human, being born in the central land, having complete faculties and faith, not committing extreme deeds, and having right view are difficult to obtain and are signs of having good karma. Because it is difficult to obtain due to having complete external circumstances, diligence is also the same. The Buddha appeared, taught the Dharma, the Dharma abides, and one follows it by ordaining. Having loving spiritual friends and harmonious supporting conditions is extremely rare, therefore one should generate diligence. Leisure and endowment

For example, obtaining leisure is extremely difficult, Like a yoke hole floating in the middle of the ocean, A turtle's neck entering it, escaping from the lower realms, Obtaining a human body is extremely difficult, like on a wall, Beans with both sides facing up are difficult to stay, Even if you obtain a human body, being born in the central land is rare. The appearance of the Udumbara (Tibetan: ཨུ་དུམྺ་ར་, Sanskrit Devanagari: udumbara, Sanskrit Romanization: udumbara, Chinese literal meaning: Udumbara flower) in the world is also rare, Therefore, entering the Buddhist path and encountering the right path is even rarer. Like a needle eye passing through silk is difficult, After obtaining the right path, practicing it according to the Dharma is also extremely difficult. Like finding a treasure from an island, Finding a true guru is extremely difficult, Thinking about these, you should diligently practice. Abandoning meaningless affairs and practicing, Will also become the cause of liberation, except for virtuous deeds, Everything should be abandoned, and diligently practice the Dharma. Deluded affairs are the cause of meaningless suffering, Useless at the time of death, meaningless, therefore, Must be abandoned like a box of poisonous snakes. This life's livelihood, friends, and discussions, Enjoyment, partiality, and evil sects, Are all wasting leisure, like burning a corpse, should be abandoned. Constantly with mindfulness and awareness, maintain caution, Thinking about leisure, practice the Bodhi of liberation. When walking, sleeping, sitting, and eating, etc., After completely eliminating the six faults such as laziness, In order to achieve the great meaning of higher realms and definite goodness, Just like the example of a hungry person seeing food, etc., Day and night, diligently engage in virtuous deeds. For its benefit, abandon this life, Hoping for the next life, diligence burns like fire. Without wasting leisure, spend time with virtuous deeds, Quickly cross the ocean of the three realms of existence. From the "Great Vehicle Key Instructions Treatise - Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Treasury", the thirteenth chapter on contemplating the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowment ends.
