General Meaning First. General Meaning First. The first general meaning is that all phenomena of samsara and nirvana are the basis, the nature of reality, the spontaneously accomplished Buddha. The essence is naturally pure. It is not made by clever Buddhas, nor is it modified by intelligent sentient beings. It is not produced by causes, nor destroyed by conditions. It does not depend on causes and conditions. It is the self-arisen wisdom, beyond words and expression. It is beyond the realm of mind and thought. In such a basic state, in the realm of non-arising, there is not a single phenomenon of samsara and nirvana that has not actually awakened to Buddhahood. As it says in the Longchen: In the vast expanse of the mind itself, there is not a single phenomenon of samsara and nirvana that has not actually awakened to Buddhahood. As it says in the Longchen: The mind itself manifests as fivefold enlightenment. Therefore, the meaning of non-duality of samsara and nirvana, the spontaneously accomplished great bliss, is free from all fabrication. As it says in the Refutation: The two are great bliss, spontaneously accomplished Buddhahood. Past Buddhas did not make this, and later sentient beings did not change it. This is the essence of not making and not changing. Thus it is revealed. Thus, in this essential meaning of the basic state, all great qualities are complete from the beginning. This is the great-grandfather of all Buddhas, and all Buddhas are said to arise from it. As it says in the Lamp of Loving-kindness: The self-arisen teacher, the father of all victorious ones. And as it says in the Tantra of the Union of Definitive Meaning: Before anything existed, the self-arisen essence is the basis of all. It is a teaching of oral instruction that does not rely on scriptures. Because it is self-realized by one's own awareness, it has never been deluded nor realized. At that time, samsara and nirvana did not arise. The basis is the self-arisen awareness. Because there is no basic ignorance, the basis is the self-arisen awareness. Because there is no basic ignorance, it has never been deluded by conditions. Therefore, it does not need to be shown by prophecy. Therefore, it is a teaching that does not arise from scriptures, a wonderful and amazing command. All Buddhas arise from it. Thus it is said. General Meaning First.
