Thus, after realizing the nature of impermanence, Cherish only this, and generate the army of faith. The faith of aspiration distinguishes between cause and effect, accepting and rejecting. The faith of conviction focuses the mind intensely on the supreme object. The faith of respect is endowed with supreme mindfulness. The faith of clarity makes the mind extremely clear with qualities. The faith of trust exhausts doubt about the Dharma. The faith of definite understanding is particularly devoted to the supreme Dharmas of hearing, thinking, and meditating. The nature of faith is like good soil, the basis of all Dharmas, causing the accumulation of virtue to increase. Faith is like a boat, crossing the ocean of existence. Like a ferryman, it protects from demons and afflictions. Like a vehicle, it leads to the island of liberation. Like a jewel king, it accomplishes whatever is desired. Like a hero, it subdues sins with power. Accumulating" } ] ============================================================

Virtuous gurus are the supreme jewels, Those without fortune have no faith at all. Their faults are extremely limitless, Like a stone at the bottom of the ocean, far from the shore of liberation. Like a boat without oars, there is no time to be delivered from existence. Like a beggar with a severed arm, there is no share of virtue. Like a burnt seed, there is no sprout of enlightenment. Like the blind, there is no appearance of the form of Dharma. Like falling into a whirlpool, constantly wandering in samsara. The six places where pure faith arises are: The faith of desire arises from being weary of existence. The faith of aspiration arises from being weary of bad friends. The faith of reverence arises from being weary of this life. The faith of purity arises from excellent places. The faith of trust arises from hearing about cause and effect. The faith of conviction arises from hearing, thinking, and meditating. Also, increasing it based on causes: Relying on holy beings, virtuous friends, and looking at sutras and tantras. Thinking about death and trusting in karma and its results. Hearing, thinking, and meditating, being more diligent than before. From this, faith will surely increase. The causes of decline are: contemplating the guru's faults. Associating with ordinary people, indulging in sensual pleasures at will. Being lazy and idle, having many worldly affairs. These and other non-Dharma activities, Blessed by demons, are said to be times of decline. The method of generating faith when it arises from conditions is: Seeing the changes of birth, old age, sickness, and death, being afflicted by illness and solitary places. Suffering befalling one, hearing the Dharma. Hearing the biographies of predecessors, seeing Jataka stories. When these arise from conditions, continue to increase them. Always meditate on the supreme excellence of faith. The measure is, from existence. The fifteenth chapter, Thinking about the Nature of Faith.
