In order to attain the state of a noble being, I will diligently engage in listening, contemplation, and meditation. Thus, through various and numerous means, the benefits of relying on the Lama are limitless. One discerns what to adopt and abandon on the correct small path, completes the accumulations, purifies obscurations, pacifies obstacles, and one's self also attains the state of a noble being, quickly reaching the city of liberation. The eighth chapter, on relying on a virtuous spiritual friend, from the Great Vehicle's instruction manual, The Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Treasury, is complete. Thus, having properly relied on a virtuous spiritual friend, one should abandon evil spiritual friends and their companions. These are those who are heavily afflicted by disturbing emotions, have bad mental streams, seek the aims of this life, are not disillusioned with worldly affairs, have narrow hearing and thought, are ignorant of the objects of knowledge, lack faith and diligence, keep far from virtuous activities, have untamed three doors, possess arrogance and hypocrisy, scold others, lack pure perception and devotion, crave food, drink, wealth, and wrong teachings, break vows and commitments, have harsh mental streams, lead all who associate with them onto the path of disturbing emotions and wrong views, increase non-virtue and diminish virtue and excellence. These are the characteristics of evil spiritual friends and their companions. The faults of associating with them are immeasurable: one's own mental stream becomes bad and pure perception diminishes, one becomes biased and arrogant, holding one's own side as superior, praising oneself and disparaging others, abandoning the correct Dharma, slandering the virtuous spiritual friends of the Great Vehicle, craving wealth and possessions, shooting the poisonous arrows of attachment and hatred, becoming bound by this life, turning one's back on the path of liberation, diminishing virtue and excellence, and increasing non-virtue." , "english_translation": "Furthermore, one is influenced by whomever one associates with. Relying on a deluded person diminishes hearing, thought, and wisdom. From a hateful person, discontent and a bad mental stream arise. From an attached person, craving for objects increases. From an arrogant person, bias and dualistic clinging increase. From a jealous person, competitiveness and the thorn of suffering increase. Associating with a swindler leads to all faults becoming swindling. One should avoid associating with those who lack renunciation and delight in this life, as well as those who enjoy arguing, those who are playful and flirtatious, those who crave power and wealth, those who are eloquent liars, and those who engage in worldly activities, and so on." } ] ============================================================

English

Whoever associates with them, their conduct will be tainted by bad habits. The fault of associating with fools is that they are filled with ignorance and prejudice towards what is to be known. They do not know the path of liberation and will walk the wrong path. Associating with those who lack faith and diligence diminishes virtue. They are lazy in practice and cause devotion to decline. Associating with Hinayana practitioners, they prefer solitude and peace. Their minds are weak, and they have no compassion for the benefit of others. They have many faults that contradict the meaning of Mahayana. They have no view or samadhi, and their discipline is lax. They only maintain ordinary awareness and seek gain. They are attached to meaningless solitude and are nihilistic. If one associates with nominalists who have no realization, they will follow meaningless words like parrots. It is like a parrot reciting. Associating with them will interrupt the path to liberation. If virtue diminishes and even the state of good rebirth cannot be achieved, what need is there to say about achieving the peaceful state of enlightenment? Therefore, one should abandon evil friends. Just as travelers on dangerous roads fear being robbed by thieves, they may lose their wealth and lives in this life, but they cannot take away lasting happiness. Beings who rely on evil spiritual friends are despised by the holy ones and abandoned by the virtuous gods, suffering many harms and pains.
