Collection of Teachings by Ngawang Lodro Drakpa JNLD293: How to Plant Special Aspirations How to Plant Special Aspirations The Three Jewels, the refuge that never deceives, possess skillful means and great compassion. They are like kind parents to sentient beings, with immense kindness, and are certainly incomparable to any other refuge one might rely on. The Lama (Guru), the Three Jewels, possess the supreme knowledge to know individually whatever happiness, suffering, good, or bad happens to us beings. They have a vast heart of compassion and concern for us wretched beings, no different from our own parents. They possess the power to protect us from all the most severe and unwanted harms and fears, a power unmatched by anyone else. Now, since I have no other refuge or protector than you, Lama (Guru), the Three Jewels, who possess knowledge, compassion, and power, may you not abandon us in this life and future lives, whether good or bad. Please bless my mindstream to generate the true Dharma. Especially now, if any unwanted things like illness occur on this body, may they serve to ripen all the negative karma of myself and all other sentient beings. May the Lama (Guru), the Three Jewels, bless me to be able to do so. It is good to think about these words from the heart, not just from the mouth. Also, in the meantime, one should sever attachment in one's heart to possessions, enjoyments, wealth, relatives, friends, and so on. Merely striving for the affairs of this life, no matter how one considers it, will certainly not lead to lasting happiness. Therefore, no matter what, there is no essence in merely pursuing the affairs of this life, so one must not cling to the pleasures of this life, and one must think about this again and again. If one does not sever attachment to this life, there is absolutely no way to accomplish genuine preparation for death. Then, the method of тренировать the mind by giving and taking good and bad is as follows, as stated in the 'Precious Garland of the Middle Way': 'May my sins ripen on them, may all my virtues ripen on them.' And also, from the teachings of the Kadampa masters: 'Give profit and victory to others, take loss and defeat upon oneself.' Like this, one should repeatedly recite either of these two and think in this way. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is indeed necessary. Whatever happiness and virtuous causes, the fruits of one's own being, give them away without any reservation from the bottom of your heart, wishing that all sentient beings who have been your mothers may possess all happiness and virtuous causes; And also, whatever non-virtuous causes and suffering results exist in the minds of all sentient beings who have been your mothers, take them all upon yourself from the bottom of your heart, wishing that all sentient beings who have been your mothers may be separated from all sinful causes and suffering results. Think about this again and again. These two objects are the actual objects of giving and taking good and bad, so it is very important to think about this again and again from the bottom of your heart. In order to clarify this object, when you inhale, imagine that all the sufferings of all sentient beings who have been your mothers, together with their causes, enter your nostrils in the form of black light and dissolve into the self-cherishing flame in your heart, thus destroying self-grasping. And when you exhale, imagine that your happiness, together with its causes, comes out of your nostrils in the form of white light and touches all sentient beings who have been your mothers, so that those sentient beings are endowed with all happiness, from the temporary happiness of gods and humans to the ultimate state of Buddhahood. In this case, the flow of air should be slightly lengthened, but you must not hold it with great force. This practice of giving and taking is the core practice of the peerless Lord Atiśa and Dromtön Gyalwai Jungne, etc., the early Kadampa masters, and it is a method of training the mind in the spirit of enlightenment, so it is definitely a particularly important and necessary Dharma. Furthermore, one should think like this: all the undesirable adverse conditions such as sickness and suffering that occur to this present body are like a broom that sweeps away or purifies all the karmic ripenings of negative karma accumulated from previous lives. The demons and spirits, etc., are the Buddhas who have manifested in the form of compassion as a means for you to exhaust the heavy burden of karmic ripening. Therefore, one should not be saddened or distressed by the harm that occurs, but should be happy and joyful. Also, in the meantime, one should always clearly visualize the Lama and the Three Jewels in one's mind, and pray that wherever I am born in the next life, I may be born in a human body endowed with Dharma, always be connected to the holy Dharma, and hear the precious teachings of the Victorious Perfect Buddha. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
