NKL106: Instructions on Offering Banners Instructions on Offering Banners These are the instructions for offering banners given by the protector Gonchok (likely referring to a Sakya master or Rinpoche) on the golden throne while teaching 'Pramanavarttika' (Commentary on Valid Cognition) during the birth anniversary of Sakya Pandita (Sakya Pandita Kunga Gyaltsen, 1182-1251) in the Water Rabbit year in Namchu (place name). Namo Guru Sarva Buddha Bodhisattva Sapariwarabhyaḥ (Tibetan, Devanagari: नमो गुरु सर्व बुद्ध बोधिसत्त्व सपरिवारभ्यः, Romanized Sanskrit: Namo guru sarva buddha bodhisattva saparivārabhyaḥ, Literal meaning: Homage to the Guru, all Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and their retinues). May the root and lineage glorious lamas, holders of the ocean of blessings and the treasure of jewels, with vows of compassion like the ocean, remember us! May the supreme and common yidams, Buddhas, Dharma, and Sangha, possessing all the treasures of wisdom like the ocean and accomplishments like the ocean, remember us! May the Dharma protectors, wealth deities, and all the excellent deities, with power like the ocean, guarding the Dharma with vows and four faces (possibly referring to the four faces of the protector), remember us! For the sake of limitless beings, and for the inexhaustible accumulation of merit and wisdom, I offer this banner adorned with precious gold, radiant like a lotus, along with other actual and mentally created offering clouds, with devotion as vast as filling infinite realms, to the supreme protectors. Please, with compassion, consider me and all beings, and accept this offering! May the activities of teaching and practice flourish universally, may the feet of the Dharma holders be firm, may their wishes be fulfilled, may the world be peaceful and happy, and may all temporary and ultimate aspirations be accomplished! In particular, may the Sakya lineage of the divine Khon family (the founding family of the Sakya school) continuously produce Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, scholars, and accomplished ones, and may the Sutra, Tantra, and all fields of knowledge increase! May all of this not be obscured by the darkness of harm, and may the qualities of your life, activities, lineage, and virtuous gatherings, like the orb of the sun, always shine in the world, and may the lotus garden of peace and happiness greatly flourish! This was written on the twenty-fifth day of the Water Rabbit year in Namchu (place name), while teaching 'Pramanavarttika' on the golden throne in the great Lhachen Temple of glorious Sakya, coinciding with the anniversary of Sakya Pandita's birth. During the grand offering, may all be auspicious and perfectly accomplished! May the sound of the Dharma spread throughout U-Tsang (Central Tibet), and may all be accomplished as desired! This was composed by Sakyapa Kunga Lodro (Sakyapa Kunga Lodro, 1299-1349). In the 'Root of Blessings' it is said: 'Om Satam Kye Svaha (Tibetan, Devanagari: ओंसतंकेस्वाहा, Romanized Sanskrit: Oṃ sataṃ ke svāhā, Literal meaning: Om, true, give, Svaha)', may all beings obtain the fame of the sound of the Dharma, which is inconceivable. The reason for being able to offer such a beautiful banner now is that the name of the glorious Dharma is complete, and the words match the fame of the sound of the Dharma.
