Sixth, Relying on a Spiritual Friend. Sixth, Relying on a Spiritual Friend. Sixth, the way to rely on a spiritual friend: If you seek someone who can show such a path, beings including gods, demons, and the lord of beings, Brahma, cannot show it. Parents, relatives, friends, and loved ones who cherish you cannot show it. Then, who can show such a path? It is a lama (guru) who is a virtuous spiritual friend who can show it. A virtuous spiritual friend is a benefactor, so you must rely on a virtuous spiritual friend and a virtuous friend. Without relying on these two, you cannot achieve the state of liberation and omniscience. Without relying on these two, achieving liberation and the state of omniscience through self-made cleverness and boasting is not mentioned in all the sutras, tantras, and treatises. Without relying on these two, you must examine whether you can cultivate the path of liberation yourself. If you examine in this way, you will not be able to cultivate it yourself. Therefore, you must rely on a lama who is a virtuous spiritual friend, but it is not beneficial to rely on just anyone you meet. If you rely on a guru who teaches views and practices that are upside down, that is a demonic spiritual friend; if you rely on such a friend, that is a demonic friend. Therefore, you must seek a virtuous spiritual friend who possesses qualities. First, you must examine the guru. For this, examine with "long ears, short eyes, whether male or female," etc., and especially examine with the Dharma: The virtuous spiritual friend or khenpo of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas must be one who has received the Pratimoksha vows with twenty-one precepts of the five categories, and who has not broken the vows for ten years, and who possesses qualities such as stability, knowledge, and pure morality; the virtuous spiritual friend of the Bodhisattvas must possess ten qualities such as peacefulness, gentleness, and near pacification; the spiritual friend or guru of the Vajrayana must possess the qualities mentioned in the scriptures of each tantra, especially the guru of Maha (Sanskrit: Mahā, great) and Anu (Sanskrit: Anu, unsurpassed) must possess eight qualities such as "guide, treasure, possessing a river." Furthermore, the guru who shows the instructions, the fourth empowerment under the Great Perfection self-path, from the four empowerments of with and without elaboration, matures the continuum; regarding vows, you must protect the root of the gradual vows, the body, speech, and mind of the guru divided into twenty-seven, the vows of Yanlan (transliteration) twenty-five, and

Like an unshielded downpour, impartiality and so on, both impartiality are pure, the solitary and spontaneous, the vows of spontaneity are completely pure, binding the continuum. The liberating instructions, the nature of reality of both primordial purity trekchö and spontaneous togal, are directly seen. Possessing various experiences and realizations of the boundaries of the four visions of the path. Accepting students without discrimination of good or bad. Possessing the blessings of the lineage, the lineage is like a golden thread, unstained by the rust of broken vows. Possessing the blessings of the lineage, the blessings of the previous gurus are transmitted ear to ear like a full vase being poured out. Such a lama, possessing all qualities, should be examined to see if he is qualified. In particular, examine the lama solely by whether or not he has bodhicitta. If he has bodhicitta, then the connection is meaningful, a good connection will lead to enlightenment in one lifetime, a bad connection will lead to endless samsara. On top of that, examine whether or not he possesses the three experiences of hearing, contemplation, and meditation on the view of the three great ones. In the meantime, rely on the lama by serving him with the three kinds of pleasing actions. When relying on him, do not focus on practice, but focus on listening and contemplating. Finally, when learning intention and action, first you must understand the essence of the lama's heart commitment. If you learn action without understanding the lama's intention, it will become hypocrisy, so learn intention first, and then learn action. Sixth, Relying on a spiritual friend.
