The ritual for laypeople taking the Pratimoksha vows, called "A Clear Mirror of the Path to Liberation." Written by Changme Dorje. The ritual for laypeople taking the Pratimoksha vows, called "A Clear Mirror of the Path to Liberation." Written by Changme Dorje. The ritual for laypeople taking the Pratimoksha vows, called "A Clear Mirror of the Path to Liberation," is presented herein. Om Swasti. Having attained the supreme liberation and enlightenment, with compassion, you tame beings according to their capacity. To that all-knowing tamer, I prostrate with all things. Relying on the ship of morality, to the supreme precious island of Nirvana, the arrangement of the unerring ritual that leads there, is presented in a concise and easy-to-understand manner. Here, when those who seek the vows of refuge come, in a clean place, in front of the representations of the Three Jewels, such as the image of the Great Sage, and whatever offerings are available, the lama sits on a high seat. The disciple prostrates three times each to the representations and the lama, then squats or kneels, joining palms, and sits. The lama says: O! You have obtained the rare and precious human body with leisure and opportunity. You have encountered the rare teachings of the Buddha. Those who desire their own well-being should strive to make the teachings of the Buddha their essential practice. And the basis of all qualities is that one must first train in the discipline of morality. Its root depends on the vows of taking refuge. As it is said: "By going for refuge to the Three Jewels, one will attain fearlessness." Therefore, its benefits are very great. If you take it by repeating after the lama, there are special requirements such as having a sense of shame and embarrassment, so please repeat after me. If there is no Dharma connection, say "Venerable," and if there is, say: "Acarya, please consider. I, named so-and-so, from this time until the end of my life, the best of bipeds, I go for refuge to the Buddha. The best of those free from desire, I go for refuge to the Dharma. The best of assemblies, I go for refuge to the Sangha. From this time until the end of my life, may the Acarya accept me as a layperson who holds the three refuges." After reciting this two or three times, the Acarya says: "It is possible." The disciple says: "Excellent!"

Thus it should be said. Then, the precepts should be explained. It is not enough to merely receive the vows of refuge; one must learn the precepts. What are these precepts like? There are three precepts to be abandoned, three precepts to be practiced, and three concordant precepts, making nine in total. First, having taken refuge in the Buddha, one should not take refuge in worldly deities. Having taken refuge in the Dharma, one should not harm sentient beings. Having taken refuge in the Sangha, one should not rely on non-Buddhists. Although there are no actual non-Buddhists in Tibet, one should not rely on anything similar to sinful friends. Second, having taken refuge in the Buddha, one should regard the representations of the Sugata's body, even fragments of tsha-tshas, as the actual Buddha, and respectfully prostrate, make offerings, and show reverence. Having taken refuge in the Dharma, one should regard the representations of the Dharma Jewel, the scriptures, even a single syllable, as the actual Dharma Jewel, and respectfully prostrate, make offerings, and show reverence as before. Having taken refuge in the Sangha, one should regard the representations of the Sangha Jewel, from ordained monks to even a yellow patched robe, as the actual Sangha Jewel, and respectfully prostrate, make offerings, and show reverence as before. Third, one should always diligently make offerings to the Three Jewels, even offering the first portion of whatever one eats or drinks. One should diligently recite the refuge prayer in the morning and evening. One should rely on holy beings, follow the Dharma, and train in conduct that accords with the Dharma. Keep these precepts in mind, and with mindfulness and awareness, always study them. After saying this, have them prostrate three times, make dedications and aspirations, and then send them back to their places. This is the ritual for bestowing the vows of refuge.
