Furthermore, as stated in the Ratnagotravibhāga: "Because they are to be abandoned, because of their deceptive nature, because they do not exist, and because they are subject to destruction, the phenomena of the two truths and the assembly of noble ones are not ultimate refuges. The sole refuge is the Buddha, who goes to the supreme meaning, because the Muni possesses the Dharmakāya. The Sangha is also ultimately included within it." Thus it is. The nature of the object, knowable, is unborn. In terms of time, there are also five aspects. The essence of time is the continuity of conditioned phenomena. The etymology is: because of accumulating and gathering. The definition is: the characteristic of time is that the cause and effect have been used up, or will be used, or are being used. The divisions are the three times: past, future, and present. In this context of taking refuge, it encompasses both the present and future times. According to the Hinayana, one commits from now until one attains the enlightenment of a Hearer or Solitary Realizer. Distinct from that, the Mahayana commits until one attains Buddhahood. The nature is the unchanging Dharma nature, which is unconditioned. In terms of benefits, there are also five aspects. The essence of benefit is a desirable result. The etymology is: because it becomes a quality that benefits. The definition is: the appearance of benefit and happiness arising from virtue is the definition of benefit. The divisions are five: the benefit that becomes a result similar to the cause; the benefit that becomes a fully ripened result; the benefit that becomes a result of personal effort; the benefit that becomes a separated result; and the benefit that becomes a lordly result. In this context of taking refuge, these five are, in order: turning away from the practices of non-Buddhists. It is said: "One will not be born in the three lower realms," and "It becomes a support." "Without obstacles, with little illness and long life." And "increasing," and so forth, are the benefits. Thus it is taught. The nature is: from the power of the profound Dharma nature, all benefits, happiness, and excellent gatherings arise effortlessly. In terms of precepts, there are five: the essence of precepts is the basis for acting with mindfulness. The etymology is: because it becomes the basis for learning and engaging. The definition is: that which is to be taken up through the rite of vows is the definition of precepts. The divisions are two: precepts of abstaining and precepts of accomplishing. In this context of taking refuge, these two encompass the precepts of each of the Three Jewels.

There are two common disciplines. The first also has two: the three root disciplines are explained separately, and the three branch disciplines are explained separately. The first is refuge in the Three Jewels, etc. The second is Buddha images, etc. The third is body and life, etc. The nature is: the Dharma nature beyond affirmation and negation is completely pure. There are five aspects to taking vows: the essence of taking vows is irreversible diligence. The meaning of the word is because the vows are taken into one's own mind-stream. The definition is: relying on either self-power or other-power rituals, taking the vows into one's own mind-stream is the definition of taking vows. There are two types of classification: newly taking vows that have not been obtained and repeatedly taking vows that have already been obtained. In this context of taking refuge, the first is shown by taking vows, etc., and the second is shown by fear, etc. Regarding nature, there are two aspects: determining the nature of the selflessness of persons and the nature of the selflessness of phenomena. The first comes from the "Seventy Verses on Refuge": Like wheels, etc., when grasped as a chariot, by analyzing self and other, in no way can it be found. Likewise, starting from the aggregates, when grasped as a sentient being, if analyzed as something different, it can never be found. The second comes from the same text: The essence is not reasonable to arise from causes and conditions, for what arises from causes and conditions becomes artificial. How can the essence be artificial? The essence that is not artificial does not depend on others. The nature of all dharmas is not all existent, therefore, in a single instant, it is said to know all Buddhas. Finally, there are five meanings for concluding with virtue: the greatness of the author, such as the tantras, etc. How the treatise was composed, such as the king and ministers, etc. The explanation of the scribe's translator, such as excellent, etc. Sealing with dedication of merit for the benefit of others, such as merit, etc. The explanation of the meaning of the author's teacher's name, such as refuge, etc., is well explained. This was also composed by one named Auspicious Lion, may this cause all beings to turn to the Three Jewels! Good! Good!
