The Six Limbs of Taking Refuge. The Great Teacher Vimalamitra. The Six Limbs of Taking Refuge. The Great Teacher Vimalamitra. Ṣa Ḍā ṅga Śa Ra ṇa Mnā Ma Bi Ha Ra Ti Sma. Herein dwells the text called "The Six Limbs of Taking Refuge." Om Svasti! This Six Limbs of Taking Refuge has four meanings. First, the meaning of the title. In Sanskrit: Ṣaḍāṅgaśaraṇaṃ (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思). In Tibetan: The Six Limbs of Taking Refuge. Second, the translation's homage, I prostrate to the Three Jewels. Third, the meaning of the text has two parts: the vow to compose, including the condensed meaning; and the actual explanation of the text's meaning. The first is: Explaining the Six Limbs of Taking Refuge. The second has two parts: a brief indication and a detailed explanation. The first is: By what one takes refuge, the place, time, necessity, benefits, precepts, and what to adopt and abandon, are explained in summary at the root. The second is the detailed explanation, in order: In samsara, one takes refuge by remembering the fear and the qualities of the Three Jewels. In that place showing the three abodes, from here until enlightenment is attained. This is turning away from the practices of the tirthikas. One will not be born in the three lower realms, it becomes the basis for higher vows. Without obstacles, one will have few illnesses and a long life. Sins and obscurations will be purified, and it is the benefit of accumulating merit. Individual precepts. The first precept of the three refuges is: Do not rely on yakshas, do not prostrate to them. Second, for all sentient beings, abandon harm and be loving. Third, do not associate with those who are sinful in one's own or others' realms. Examine images, verses, and those wearing patched yellow robes with faith. Do not slander or reject anything spoken from the mouth, but accept it on the crown of your head. From pure and impure individuals, one should regard the holy ones as superior. Common precepts. Even for the sake of life, do not abandon the Three Jewels. Whatever adverse conditions may arise at this time, do not seek refuge in others. Always remember the qualities of greatness. Make offerings with pure food. The refuge formula should be recited regularly. This is a constant reminder at six times. One should first understand what to adopt and abandon. If fear arises, it is a reminder. Fourth, the meaning of the conclusion. Although there are many things to be known in the continuum, because the king and ministers did not develop faith, I have explained the ritual of taking refuge. Write it well, Kumara! May merit increase.

Dedication. The Six Limbs of Taking Refuge. Composed by the great teacher Vimalamitra, it is complete. Although there is no colophon, it is regarded as authoritative because it is included in the hundred minor Dharma practices that are the heart essence of the venerable Atisha. This printed edition is a precious old copy that I, Jangchub Gyatso, found in the manuscript of Khenpo Tsultrim Tharphen and inserted.
