The History of Tara. The History of Tara. Commentary on the Twenty-One Praises of Tara. Namo Guru. As long as existence remains, taking the form of a mother, Saving limitless beings from the ocean of suffering, To the noble Tara with steadfast vows, I respectfully bow and request you to look upon us with your wisdom eye. The profound and vast qualities of whom, This tantric text that speaks in the form of praise, Relying on the secret words of past wise men, Shall be explained in easy and concise words. Furthermore, the activity of the Buddhas of the three times, together with their sons, is shown in the form of a goddess, liberating all sentient beings without discrimination from all suffering, becoming the sole refuge of peace and nirvana, the holy Tara, praised by the perfectly enlightened Buddha, the twenty-one praises with benefits, explained in an easy way in three parts: The history of Tara, the meaning of the words of the tantra, the method of practice. First, in a time long ago, in a world called Manifold Light, there appeared a Bhagavan Tathagata named Drum Sound. In his teachings, there was a king's daughter named Wisdom Moon, who was extremely respectful. She made offerings and showed great respect for many years to the countless sanghas of the Buddha Drum Sound, together with his retinue of bodhisattvas and shravakas, and she first generated the mind of supreme enlightenment. At that time, the monks urged her, saying, "With this root of virtue, you have been born in this very body. If you make a prayer to do good for the teachings, it will be so. Therefore, it is appropriate to do so." In response, she said: Here there is no male, nor is there female, There is no self, no person, nor is there consciousness, The designation of male and female, is futile and meaningless, The evil-minded of the world, are born of various delusions. And so on. There are many who desire enlightenment in the body of a man, but there are none who practice the benefit of beings in the body of a woman. Therefore, until samsara is empty, I will do the benefit of beings in the form of a woman. Thus she vowed. Then, residing in the royal palace, while skillfully enjoying the five objects of desire, she also entered into samadhi.

Through meditation, she attained forbearance of the unarisen dharma and accomplished the samadhi called "Liberating all beings." By the power of this, every day in the morning, she liberated a hundred million beings from the minds of worldly beings and did not eat until they were placed in forbearance. In the afternoon, she also placed that many. Then, the former name changed and became "Tara." The Tathagata Drum Sound also prophesied that as long as she had not attained unsurpassed enlightenment, she would be known only by the name Goddess Tara. Then, in the kalpa called "Extensive Perfection," in the presence of the Tathagata Meaningful Accomplishment, she vowed to protect all beings in the ten directions of countless realms from harm and entered the samadhi called "Completely Destroying all Demons." Every day, she placed a hundred million leaders of beings in meditative samadhi. Every night, she subdued a hundred million lords of the Paranirmita-vasavartin gods, and therefore she was known as Swift Heroine and Heroine. Then, in the kalpa called "Unobstructed," the bhikshu named Immaculate Light Appearance was empowered by the light rays of great compassion from all the Tathagatas of the ten directions and became the noble Avalokiteshvara. Again, all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas empowered him with great light rays that had become the essence of the wisdom of omniscience. The two light rays, former and latter, merged like father and mother, and from the heart of Avalokiteshvara, Tara arose, protecting beings from all fears. In this present fortunate kalpa, in the one hundred and eight names of Tara, it is said: Glorious and pleasing Potala, adorned and beautified with various realms, spread with various trees, many birds making sounds, various waterfalls making great noises, various wild animals gathering, various kinds of flowers filling with fragrance, possessing various pleasing fruits, the sound of the song of the six-legged insects, the Kinnaras singing beautiful songs, even the mad elephants...
