Associating with people who have (afflictions), it is not easy or possible to avoid them out of fear. Therefore, one should be more cautious in extracting the essence of renunciation from that very thing. If one is slightly tainted by afflictions and sinful, unwholesome dharmas, one should not become fragile and regretful, causing the joy of virtuous practice to diminish. Rather, through the very fact that one's mind has become fragile, one should increase the courage of one's mind to abandon afflictions and sinful, unwholesome things, disregarding fragility and overcoming it, and one must practice. For, if one becomes discouraged in practicing the path due to afflictions and other factors, and is controlled by them, it is said that one will fall into the obstacles of demons. Therefore, in order to abandon the two obscurations of oneself and others, no matter what harm occurs to one's practice, one should not stop practicing due to it, but should endure it without taking it to heart. No matter what kind of mind one observes, whether it desires liberation or not, all of them are endowed with immeasurable faults such as afflictions. Therefore, one should not use those faults to generate more faults, and one should not use the actions of attachment and aversion to make everyone discordant with oneself and others. Instead, one should gather them with actions free from attachment and aversion, and practice harmoniously. Among these, first, one should not become the basis of discord that causes afflictions such as attachment and aversion in other beings. Instead, one should transform what is seen into a basis of harmony that is free from attachment and aversion and is pleasing. Then, one should also cause others to be harmonious with each other through love, compassion, friendship, and affection.
