The questions and answers based on the smallest of form and the shortest of time, etc., are made by the venerable one himself. Svasti praja bhyah! (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思) May there be well-being for the people! In the three realms, called the second Buddha, Whose name beautifies the path of the ears, The collection of rays of light from the speech of Vasubandhu (དབྱིག་གཉེན་) the Sun (ཉིན་བྱེད།), May it still be clear in the continent of those to be tamed! That omniscient one, for measuring years and so on, For the sake of representing the terms that express them, Form, name, time limit, atom, letter, instant, and The sixty instants that were spoken, When the power of the sun turns to the north, The ninth day of the end of the second summer month, What star appears on the full moon of midsummer, And also what is the beginning and end of day and night, The meanings of the scriptures, both coarse and fine, With a pure mind following reason, with a subtle intellect, Capable of distinguishing without mixing, The meanings of what he asked are answered as follows: The subtle particle placed at the smallest limit of form, Is devoid of parts such as east, etc., And also, as long as there is a part of direction, Therefore, it cannot be placed at the smallest limit. The instant of the limit of time, by many causes and conditions, The duration of producing fruit and a sesame pod, One part and one atom moving and, With equal force, cutting one tip of wool, Although there are many names for the duration that is spoken, In short, there is no shorter than that, They spoke of it as representing one time. For the example of placing the limit of name as a letter, In his own commentary, he said it is like a cow. This is because many letters are assembled, This meaning, still when I am contemplating, The collection of sixty instants, Is named as that instant. The name of one hundred and twenty instants of the limit of time, This is without doubt if one understands the limit of time. The ninth day of the end of the second summer month, and Likewise, the ninth day of the fourth winter month, The time when the sun is said to turn in summer and winter, Is the ninth day of the white month of the autumn and spring pasture. Which of those two months does the sun turn, That month, that

Now many think so. However, my guru Namkha Sangpo believes that the view of the Abhidharmakośa is that the months of (Khums, Devanagari: , Romanization: , literal meaning:) and (Khra'i, Devanagari: , Romanization: , literal meaning:) are months. Because it appears so in the Chinese version. If that is the case, then midsummer is the fish month, and it can be known to be the waxing moon. This method is also mentioned in the Chinese version of the Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya. The detailed classifications of seasons mentioned in texts such as the *Śāsanāvasthāna*, *Abhidharmakośa*, *Sūryagarbha*, *Mālikā*, *Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya*, *Lekhānuvartinī*, and *Mahāvibhāṣā*, I wish to elaborate extensively elsewhere. Therefore, only a seed is shown here. Seeing that this and the current solar return time differ greatly, I will temporarily put aside those who refute this claim. The beginning of the day is the first light of dawn, and the end is when the sun sets. From this, the beginning and end of the night can be inferred. Although there are other sayings, that is according to different viewpoints. Those arguments that consider conventional truth to be real, I have not said that they are atoms. Based on the tenets of the two schools, I said that the consciousness of the senses can see atoms. Because it is said that the five consciousnesses accumulate and point to it, being confused by this, many unintelligent people unanimously say: There are no atoms in the realm of the senses! I do not think this view of the *Gzeq Zan* is reasonable, so I spoke according to the descriptions of the formation of gross matter in the *Abhidharmakośa* and *Tattvasiddhi*, and as confirmed by the heretics. When the two realists form gross matter, seeing that contact damages the atoms, they believe that connections without contact exist, except for surrounding with intervals and surrounding without intervals. At that time, other things with limbs do not arise, nor does one merge into another, nor do atoms lose their nature, however, the atoms are merely gathered together. If that is the case, many atoms will be clearly seen, and atoms will never be seen. To those who say this, what more needs to be said with rational words? Now it is still necessary to learn the basics of letters. The consciousness of the senses can see scattered atoms, but subsequent determination grasps gross matter. Even if the last moment is grasped, it is like determining the subsequent continuity through analytical consciousness. If there is no ability to produce an image, atoms cannot be objects of the senses, because there is no giving of an image.
