Chapter Seven. Chapter Seven. The seed of Bodhicitta in the pond of Hinayana, The mind of Hearers and Solitary Realizers who have degenerated from their lineage, Awakened by the power of the boatman of emptiness and compassion, Go to the island of omniscience in the great ocean of Mahayana. The essence of the five perfections, such as generosity, In the unrevealed iron ore, Completely decayed, the elixir of skillful means and wisdom, Once applied, immediately becomes invaluable. Because the Bodhicitta that unites the skillful means of compassion and the wisdom of emptiness, Combining the foundation of the four immeasurables, Arises from aspiration and practice, and from learning the precepts. The essence of loving-kindness is the desire for others' happiness, Just as a loving mother loves her child, Accumulating body, possessions, and all virtues, Learn to benefit others and endure harm. The essence of compassion is towards the suffering of others, The intense mental strength of being unable to bear it, Seeing the cause and effect of suffering of all six realms of beings, Being forced to shed tears. The essence of joy is towards the perfection of others, Generating a joyful mind, meditating on wishing well to all, Rejoicing in each obtaining it through their own power, And praying that they will never be separated from it in the future. The essence of equanimity is to sever attachment and aversion, Cutting off bias and partiality, expanding equality, Towards the three thoughts of enemies, friends, and neutrals, Practice equally benefiting them as objects. With signs and without signs, combined in sequence, The loving-kindness of desire, the compassion of stinginess, and The joy of arrogance, the equanimity of ignorance, Are not the path to liberation, but the four Brahma-viharas, Similar and close to them, abandon the ones with signs completely. Here, related to the path of peace, The object of focus is all sentient beings, The nature of phenomena that appear but are without inherent existence, From the form of meditation transforming into strength, Becoming the cause of generating the two Bodhicittas, Therefore, it is called the four immeasurables with special characteristics. Meditation has order and is not fixed, Focus on the object that is easy to arise, However, if meditating on loving-kindness becomes a cause of attachment, Shift to meditating on equanimity that is free from near and far, If it becomes ignorant and indifferent because of that, Shift to meditating on compassion, cutting off the cause and effect of suffering, If the strength of compassion is weak and biased, Shift to meditating on joy, eliminating the inferior mind.

Prevent arising (of samsara). If the mind becomes wild and scattered due to joy, cultivate loving-kindness and other qualities by alternating them, placing them at the center. By cultivating in this way, the ripened result will become manifest. In the desire realm, one obtains the bodies of gods and humans, as well as definitive goodness. By experiencing such a causal relationship, one becomes free from discordant factors and attains happiness. Through empowerment, one enjoys delightful and joyful realms. If these four actions become powerful, one will obtain the qualities of accomplishing the two benefits. When loving-kindness is mastered, one cherishes beings like one's own children. There is no hatred, and one pleases others. The essence of loving-kindness is emptiness, without inherent existence. One obtains mirror-like wisdom and perfect enjoyment. When compassion is mastered, one takes the suffering of others as one's own burden, and a mind free from harm arises. Free from attachment, emptiness is connected to compassion. Discriminating wisdom accomplishes the Dharmakaya. When joy is mastered, the root of jealousy is severed. Wealth becomes stable, and peace and tranquility are never interrupted. Meditative joy, without an object, obtains accomplishing wisdom and the supreme Nirmanakaya. When equanimity is mastered, self and others, enemies and friends, are treated equally. There is no pride, and a profound and peaceful realization arises. Without ignorance, one realizes the wisdom of the Dharmadhatu and manifests the Svabhavikakaya. The qualities of these four immeasurables are such that the cause and effect are extremely vast and unfailing. Without relying on other wrong paths and the causes of samsara in other tenets, or on the contradiction between emptiness and compassion, on the path of the pure liberation of the noble sons, one should become accustomed to the virtue of pacifying afflictions. From "The Rain of Joy, a Treasury of Precious Qualities," the chapter on the four immeasurables, the seventh chapter is complete. Seventh Chapter.
