Chapter Two. Chapter Two. The four characteristics of existence – origination, duration, decay, and emptiness – are used to measure time in kalpas. However, this is a world of destruction, criticized by name. To cut off its faults, seven fires and one water will come. Even the Vajra Supreme Body, the teacher of gods and humans, whose constant gaze is obscured, whose unwavering service has become lax, displays the joy of realization in the realm of peace. Having achieved meditation, one could remain for a kalpa, but upon seeing death, it feels meaningless. Even Brahma, Indra, Sukhasambhava, and the Chakravartins do not consider ways to escape from the clutches of the Lord of Death, Mara. The celestial medicine gardens are lush and delightful, but the hunter with a club in hand repeatedly seeks the lives of beings, thinking only of this, and nothing else. Beings tormented by the summer heat rejoice in the clear light of the autumn moon, but they are not afraid, even as a hundred days pass and their lives slip away. The achievements of beings are as fragile and fleeting as a strand of hair. Therefore, the life of a human being passes more quickly than the hungry ghosts wandering on the earth, the castles flying in the sky, and even the sun, moon, and stars. One is afflicted by the punishment of old age in one's prime. Being in a state of harmony is disturbed by illness. Perfect interdependence is destroyed by decay. Death comes quickly to seize life. When one is defeated on the battlefield of Yama, one runs to a cliff where there is no refuge or support, abandoning the radiance of life and the senses. Even medicine and doctors flee from it. The limbs are tired from moving, and the breath trembles and pants uncontrollably. Even though relatives surround and grieve, they are powerless to help, like a hook that has lost its grip. The movement of breath is as weak as the hair of a horse's tail, cut by the sharp axe of the Lord of Death. With a haggard face and exposed teeth, one enters the dark abyss of karmic destiny. This concludes the second chapter, the chapter on impermanence, from the work called "A Rain of Joy from the Treasury of Precious Qualities."
