The Path of Accumulation: The Path of Accumulation: For beginners, this is the root of virtue corresponding to the aspect of liberation, filling one's own continuum with a collection of merits, and becoming the gateway to entering liberation. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: "The mind of renunciation is said to be superior to attainment, it is said to be the perfection of discipline." Thus, the discipline of each ordinary person, and as it is said in the sutras: "The eye sees all forms without grasping at characteristics, without grasping at secondary marks," etc., thus guarding the doors of the senses, and as it is said in the Suhrllekha: "Having understood food to be like medicine, use it without greed or hatred, not for the sake of fatness, not for the sake of beauty, nor for the sake of increasing strength, but only for the sake of maintaining the body." Thus, knowing the measure of food, and as it is said in that same text: "The intelligent one, during all the day, and also in the first and last watches of the night, should recite scriptures, not allowing sleep to pass in vain, and should lie down with mindfulness in between." Thus, not sleeping in the first and last watches of the night, but striving in yoga, and as it is said in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: "The state of body and mind, should be constantly observed again and again, that alone is the summary of that, it is the characteristic of guarding mindfulness." Thus, taking delight in abiding in mindfulness is learning all the dharmas that are the cause of liberation. Similarly, as it is said: "Faith and discipline, giving and hearing, stainless shame, knowledge and modesty, wisdom are the seven riches spoken of by the Buddha, other riches are meaningless, one should understand this." Thus, relying on the seven noble riches, and as it is said in the Subhāṣitasiddhināma: "Whatever is done carelessly during the day, should be confessed individually at night, whatever is done at night should be confessed in the morning, one should rejoice in what is done well." Thus, practicing confessing sins, etc., and as it is said in the Ratnāvalī: "How should a Bodhisattva act when he acts? If various defilements arise in the senses, he should stop them for the benefit of sentient beings with words that accord with reason." Thus, purifying all objects of action, and as the meaning spoken of in the Madhyāntavibhāga, as previously explained, practicing the ten practices of Dharma, etc., there are also other virtues that become the cause of the noble path.

Therefore, for those who properly study the wisdom arising from hearing the scriptures, the wisdom arising from reasoning about their meaning, and the wisdom arising from meditation that is not contrary to them, beginners who wish to abandon the suffering of samsara and attain the bliss of liberation should strive to learn these as much as possible. Furthermore, in the stage of the small accumulation path, one should mainly meditate on the four mindfulnesses of body, feeling, mind, and phenomena; in the middle stage, one should abandon evils that have arisen, prevent evils that have not arisen, generate virtues that have not arisen, and increase virtues that have arisen, namely the four right abandonments; in the great stage, one should mainly meditate on the samadhi of aspiration, diligence, mind, and investigation, namely the four legs of miraculous power. As for the path of preparation, those who practice with faith and aspiration arising from the accumulation of merit should gradually cultivate the roots of virtue that are in accordance with the aspects of discernment in order to realize the truths, and thus become an entrance to liberation. That is to say, the morality and so on of ordinary individuals up to the attainment of warmth are also those previously mentioned. In particular, as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Bodhisattvas in samadhi, except for the speech of the mind, do not see all meanings clearly." Therefore, the samadhi and wisdom that are equally possessed when the appearance of the truths is obtained is the stage of warmth; in order to increase the appearance of the Dharma, one constantly engages in steadfast diligence. As it is said, the samadhi and wisdom that are equally possessed when the appearance of the truths increases is the stage of the peak; thereafter, "All appearances of meaning transform into appearances of mind." As it is said, the samadhi and wisdom that are equally possessed when one enters one aspect of the truths is the stage of forbearance that accords with the truths; at that time, "One quickly attains uninterrupted samadhi." As it is said, the samadhi and wisdom that are equally possessed immediately after the truths are obtained is the supreme stage of worldly Dharma. And each of these is further divided into small, medium, and large.

It also transforms into three types due to classification. In the first two of these four, one should mainly cultivate the five faculties of faith, diligence, mindfulness, samadhi, and wisdom. In the latter two, one should mainly cultivate the five powers that have transformed from them. As stated in the Madhyāntavibhāga (Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes): "From the faculties and the powers, each arises two branches of definitive distinction." It is like that. The path of accumulation is:
