First, the basis includes any valuable object that is entirely separate from oneself, as well as objects dedicated to the Three Jewels even if they have no actual owner, and treasures in the human realm whose ownership is uncertain. The thought is like considering another's property as one's own, desiring to abandon debts, entrusted items, gambling, etc., with an unerring cognition; as well as the mind of deception; and the motivation to take by force or stealth. The action is when such a basis and thought cause the action to manifest as a physical or verbal expression, whether one does it oneself or has others do it. The affliction is generally related to the three poisons, but particularly characterized by greed and miserliness. The culmination is when, with such thought and action, the object is moved or not, the path of taking what is not given is completed as soon as the thought of having obtained it arises. From whom does one take what is not given in the case of objects belonging to the Three Jewels and treasures? First, it is taken from the Three Jewels themselves or from the donors of those objects. Secondly, it is taken from the king of the place where the treasure is located or from the non-human beings who guard the treasure. In particular, if an individual with the lineage of the Bodhisattva vows has given away everything they possess for the sake of others and firmly believes that all their belongings belong to others, if they use them for themselves due to forgetfulness, they commit a root downfall or a similar non-root downfall if they benefit from its value, and a gross transgression if they do not." }, { "original_tibetan": "གཉིས་པ་མ་བྱིན་པར་ལེན་པ་ནི།", "chinese_translation": "第二,不予而取是:", "english_translation": "Secondly, taking what is not given is:" } ] ============================================================
