Eliminating erroneous misconceptions about what is to be purified, what purifies, etc. Eliminating erroneous misconceptions about what is to be purified, what purifies, etc. It should be understood that phenomena that are pure by nature are what is to be purified, and phenomena that are impure are the defilements that purify. If this is the case, then the Tathagatagarbha of the Tathagata also becomes what is to be purified, so does the Buddha also need to purify defilements? Answer: The Tathagatagarbha that abides in the Buddha as the result of purification also abides in sentient beings as what is to be purified; the Tathagatagarbha that abides in sentient beings as what is to be purified is the same as that which abides in the Buddha as the result of purification. Because there is not the slightest difference in essence between the Tathagatagarbha of sentient beings and the Buddha. It is like the sky that pervades all clouds, whether present or absent, having not the slightest difference in essence. Therefore, the Tathagatagarbha, which is pure by nature, can be both defiled and undefiled depending on the individual; it can be both what is to be purified and the result of purification, so one must be skilled in the profound key point of non-contradiction, non-fault. Eliminating erroneous misconceptions about what is to be purified, what purifies, etc.
