21. The Story of the Goose's Rebirth 21. The Story of the Goose's Rebirth It is said that once he was reborn as a goose. In the Sutra Requested by the Householder Moonlight, the Blessed One said: Shariputra, in the past, when the Tathagata Golden Light Buddha was alive, on the bank of the Ganges River, a hermit went to a place of practice to meditate. When he was sleeping with a woman, a goose landed on the fence and said: This leisure and fortune of human life is obtained once in a hundred lifetimes. It is difficult to obtain and very easy to destroy. This life is impermanent, like a rainbow in the sky. Corrupted discipline is the firewood of hell. Then, the monk said: The birds flying in the sky, making all kinds of noises, are they gods or mostly demons? Don't come near, go away. Let the hermit have intercourse with his own woman. Then, the goose said: Putting aside the big, putting aside the small, when ordained, the Abbot and Acharya are established as witnesses like wish-fulfilling jewels. Having vowed to follow the Buddha Golden Light, indulgence is a demon of ignorance. Alas, thinking that this bird is an emanation of the Tathagata, he said: Golden body, beautiful eyes, conch-like head. Stretching wings of skillful means and wisdom in the sky. With the form of a bird, yet with the thought of enlightenment. If abandoning indulgence, how should it be abandoned? Then, the goose said: Just like cleaning a bottle filled with filth. For the impure body of feces and urine, without examination, it is covered with skin, appearing beautiful. If examined carefully and repeatedly, it can be abandoned. Then, the hermit said: Bird king with the body of a goose, lord of the Dharma. From beginningless time until now, no matter how much I have done, I have not attained enlightenment. Please grant me a Dharma to attain enlightenment in this life. Then, the goose said: By offering stainless, pure, and unchanging Buddhas with undefiled flowers, one transcends the karma of embodied beings, obscured ones, and the four maras. In this life, one will quickly attain enlightenment. The hermit practiced single-mindedly and attained the essence of enlightenment. Shariputra, the venerable youth Licchavi, he liberates many beings from the state of indulgence. The one who was reborn as a goose is this Shravaka of mine. The one who was reborn as a hermit is now the monk Moon Banner.

is his own self. The woman is Uttara. Even if my Shravaka disciple is born as a swan, he is an umbrella for sentient beings in the heat. He is a jewel for the poor. He is medicine for those afflicted by disease. He is the wisdom that removes pain. He is a lamp in the darkness. It should be known that he is the captain who saves from the ocean. Thus, the twentieth chapter, the story of being born as a swan, is complete. 21 The Twentieth. The Story of Being Born as a Swan.
