18, Seventeenth Chapter: The Story of the Bodhisattva Beautiful Wisdom. 18, Seventeenth Chapter: The Story of the Bodhisattva Beautiful Wisdom. Furthermore, it is said that there once was a Bodhisattva. In the Sutra of Immaculate and Extensive Discipline, it says: Just as the ocean is the abode of many precious things such as gold, silver, and lapis lazuli, so too is discipline the abode of all the Dharmas of Bodhi. Therefore, even if one were to lose body and life, one would never violate discipline. Ananda, in the past, in a bygone era, there appeared in the world a Tathagata named King of Victors. Near him was one named Noble Beautiful Wisdom, free from afflictions, having cast off burdens, with outflows exhausted, an Arhat. Through the power of the Tathagata Buddha, in the early morning, he went for alms to a city called Paitāla. There he met a maiden with subdued senses and a beautiful form, adorned with ornaments and silken garments. Tormented by desire, she spoke with seductive words: Possessing a body of leisure and endowment, with a beautiful form, exceedingly lovely, holding a begging bowl and a staff, son of the Victorious One, exceedingly rare to meet, today I have found you. Quickly fulfill my desires! Then the Bodhisattva thought: What is it? Has this maiden been afflicted by a wind disorder? Or phlegm? Bile? A combined disorder? Or is she tormented by desire? Even so, the monk, greatly restraining his conduct, said: The red flame of desire burns the sandalwood of discipline. Abandoning beneficial mentors and companions, embracing the demoness who destroys. Is such an act madness? Then the maiden, touching the earth with her five limbs, prostrated and said: Day and night I have been thinking of you, and today I have found an opportunity. In this house are treasure troves of jewels and enjoyment. Today, please be my master. The monk said: If one violates discipline and falls into the Avici hell, calling out to the beloved companion in one's mind will be of no use. When walking on a path filled with sharp blades, the soles of the feet and the body will be chopped into pieces like vegetables and fall to the ground.

In this world, a place despised by all. Relatives and kin treat one like a slave. Therefore, it is better to abandon this body and life. Practices that violate the precepts, praised by all Buddhas of the three times, I will never do. Then the monk thought: If I flee from here and spread secret words, this girl will surely kill herself out of shame. Rather, I should pass away in this room. So he said to the girl: Close the doors tightly and go. When I have finished all the work, come back here again, and we will engage in acts of passion. After giving these instructions, as the girl went to close the outer door, the monk found a razor and was overjoyed. He took off the clothes he was wearing and hung them upside down on a pillar. Joining his palms, he sat on a cushion of kusha grass and said: I abandon the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, as well as the Khenpo and Acharya. Thinking to keep the precepts, I abandon this impure body. Wherever I am born, may I quickly and constantly see the Buddha and Bodhi, and be endowed with pure conduct. May I exhaust the outflows and quickly attain omniscience. Having said this, he cut his own throat and passed away, and the earth shook as if unable to bear it. Then the girl returned and saw the monk's corpse covered with blood like red sandalwood. She was terrified, tore her hair, stood up, and wept. Then her parents came and knocked on the door, calling out, but she did not speak. So they sent someone inside to open the door and saw the monk's corpse. When they asked the girl, she thought to herself: If I tell the truth, I will be ashamed. If I lie, saying that the monk was teasing me, I will slander the noble one and go to hell. I will experience various kinds of suffering, so I will tell the truth. The king struck the golden drum, gathered all his retinue, and burned the Bodhisattva's corpse with incense such as Gośīrṣa sandalwood, and offered the relics and the three Dharma robes to the Buddhas. That monk is now this Licchavi. The seventeenth chapter, the Jataka of the Bodhisattva Beautiful Mind, is complete. 18 Seventeenth. The Jataka of the Bodhisattva Beautiful Mind.
