The five differences between inner and outer. The five differences between inner and outer. The way in which the Buddhist doctrine surpasses the outer heretics' doctrine by five differences is as follows: The difference in the object of reliance, the refuge; the difference in the view of the nature of reality; the difference in the habit of meditation; the difference in the activity of conduct; and the difference in the attainment of the fruit, are far superior. Moreover, the refuge is: If one takes refuge in the unsurpassed Three Jewels, one is an inner practitioner; if one does not take refuge in them, but takes refuge in Brahma and Ishvara, etc., other worldly gods, one is an outer practitioner. Then, in what way is the inner practitioner superior? The other gods themselves are drowning in the ocean of samsara and have not been liberated from the suffering of existence, so they cannot liberate others. If one takes the Buddha as the teacher, the Dharma as the path, and the Sangha as the friend of enlightenment, one can be protected from all suffering and placed in the state of liberation and omniscience, so one is superior. The view is that the common one is the four seals of Dharma, and the uncommon one is that the inner practitioner acknowledges the freedom from extremes and the transcendence of thought and expression; if one does not accept that, but accepts falling into the extremes of permanence and annihilation, one is an outer practitioner. How can one explain the way of being superior in this regard? By looking at the extremes of permanence and annihilation, one is deluded about the true meaning and the eye of Dharma is blinded, so one wanders again in the darkness of existence. By diligently focusing on the meaning of emptiness and selflessness like the sky, one is not deluded about the object of knowledge, and the eyes of wisdom, which know the reality of all Dharmas without obstruction, are opened, so one knows the flaws of samsara and nirvana and does not abide in either extreme of existence and peace, so one is superior. The meditation is that the common one meditates on the meaning of selflessness in the order of the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, and the uncommon one realizes that all Dharmas are of the nature of the sky and meditates on the essence of emptiness and compassion, which is the inner practitioner. If one does not meditate on that, but only stops the mind's thoughts, and holds the mind in a one-sided state of bliss, clarity, and non-thought, one is an outer practitioner. Then, how is one superior? By the temporary holding of the mind, the two obscurations are not purified and samsara is not stopped. By meditating on the essence of emptiness and compassion, the heat and signs are perfected, the five paths and ten bhumis are gradually traversed, the conditioned and the Dharma nature are transformed, and one attains the unwavering, innate stronghold, so one is superior. The conduct is the nature of attachment, hatred, and ignorance.

Those who are attached to pleasant objects and consider harming others as an obstacle to the path are internalists (Buddhists). Those who do not think so and act in reverse are externalists. So, by what is it superior? As for harming, let alone attaining liberation, it will become an obstacle to enlightenment and a cause for falling into evil destinies. One should not be attached to any object, and especially by abandoning everything that harms others, temporarily, loving-kindness and compassion, special bodhicitta will arise in one's own mindstream. Ultimately, one will surely become the abode, support, island, protector, refuge, companion, and friend of all beings, and therefore one is superior. What is the result? By that very path, in common terms, one can actually attain any of the three liberations; in uncommon terms, one can directly attain the ultimate meaning of Buddhahood, the spontaneous accomplishment of the three bodies. This is the internal path. Those who cannot attain these, and liberation remains only at the level of aspiration, are externalists. There, the way of being superior is just like that. Because externalists have entered the wrong path, the result is also wrong, and there is no choice but to fall from lower to lower. Internalists, like the steps of a ladder, no matter which teaching of the higher and lower vehicles they enter in accordance with the order of their faculties, they can actually obtain the result corresponding to their own path, and it appears manifestly in the visible dharma, so it is extremely superior. This passage was also excerpted by Go Tulku. Five differences between internal and external.
