The Bardo of Natural State. The Bardo of Natural State. In the third section of the beneficial instructions on the bardo, the subsequent instructions, there are two stages of instruction based on the faculties and diligence of the intermediate and lower levels. First, the oral instructions for attaining Buddhahood in the bardo for those with intermediate faculties and diligence: Even if one has sharp faculties and excellent diligence, due to obstacles from circumstances, or for those with intermediate faculties in terms of hearing, thinking, and diligence, it is said that they can be liberated in any of the four bardos before death. Therefore, one must learn the oral instructions for liberation from now on. That is, in general, the phenomena that appear as wisdom from the ground are the pure bardo of dharmata, and all phenomena included in the six realms of samsara are the impure bardo of delusion. From the beginning of the ground, the essence of the ground, until the mind with its seeds is not perfected in the essence of the ground, it is the bardo. Specifically, here, as it is said in the root tantra, "There are four kinds of divisions." Thus, the bardo of natural state, the bardo of dying, the bardo of dharmata, and the bardo of existence. These are the four definite boundaries of the bardo. The first is from the time of conception in the mother's womb until the onset of a serious illness that will surely lead to death, which is called the bardo of natural state or the bardo of the place of birth. For this, it is necessary to cut off clinging through hearing and thinking, like a guide going to the Golden Island or a wren entering its nest. That is, just as a guide gathers ships and a wren examines its nest, from now on, relying on a noble lama, one should not give in to laziness or procrastination in the activities of hearing, thinking, and meditating as he has taught, but diligently strive to cut off clinging, so that even when the time of death comes, one should have a joyful and longing feeling, without fear or dread, like a son returning to his father's house. The Bardo of Natural State.
