Explanation of the Habits of the Four Extremes Explanation of the Habits of the Four Extremes Establishing the Foundation on the Three Immovable Ones Secondly, the explanation of the habits of the four extremes. In the "Vast Expanse of Clarity," it says: "The essential instructions of the extremes are fourfold; it is impossible to be without them behind the former." Although the essential point of the meaning is not grasped, what is needed behind the former, namely the four appearances, are: establishing the foundation, measuring, pegging, and the measure of liberation. Among these, the first, establishing the foundation on the three immovable ones, is: the three postures of the body should not be moved. That is, if the body does not move, the channels do not move; if the channels do not move, the winds do not move; if the winds do not move, the mind does not move; if the mind does not move, the thoughts that cause movement cease, and one abides in awareness. The way of looking with the eyes should not be moved. Because the essential channel of awareness, its essential door, and its essential lamp are such, if the channel does not move, the eyes do not move; if the eyes do not move, the lamp does not move, so the increase of appearances, the expanse of awareness, is without separation. The wind and mind should not be moved from their natural state. By this, thoughts do not arise, and arising and liberation are simultaneous. There is a need for the union of the expanse of awareness. As the Root Tantra says: "Have faith in the extremes; establish the foundation on the three immovable ones; the wind and mind will reach the essential point." Thus it is said. Measuring with the Three Abidings Secondly, measuring with the three abidings is: when the wind that moves external appearances is exhausted, the expanse of awareness abides without coming and going. Because it abides, it causes the realms to reach the measure. When the wind that moves the internal aggregates is exhausted, the body abides without movement. Because it abides, it purifies the illusions of samsara. When the wind that moves secret thoughts is exhausted, thoughts do not flow and abide. Because it abides, the cause of the mind's thoughts moving is exhausted. At that time, there are two things that arise: showing the measure with dreams, and appearing at the door of the three signs. First, grasping the measure with dreams is: those of sharp faculties and great diligence, because their dreams dissolve into the expanse, pure sleep appears as luminosity itself. This is a sign that the connection of habitual patterns is severed, so in this life, the light body is accomplished and enlightenment is attained. The middling ones, because they know in dreams and are accustomed to transformation, will surely recognize the bardo and be liberated. The inferior ones, the dreams of bad habitual patterns are constantly exhausted, and they turn into only good dreams, so they become breathing in the transformation of their own nature.

Signs! The ways in which the three signs appear are: As a sign of seeing the manifest nature of reality, the body does not remain in activity, because the pulse is slow, like a turtle placed in a wooden bowl, without movement. The basis of speech is pure, like a mute person, not wanting to speak. The mind realizes self-liberation without grasping, abiding in stillness like a dakini entering samadhi. As a sign of seeing the increase of experience, the wind dissolves into the central channel, without discriminating between good and bad, the body does not groom or adorn itself like a man afflicted by illness. Speech transcends affirmation and negation, speaking nonsense randomly like a madman blurting out his own words. The mind's thoughts dissolve on their own, like a person poisoned seven times, knowing they will surely die, resolving not to turn back to recollection. The three signs of wisdom reaching its peak are: the body has mastery over the channels and winds, like an elephant stuck in the mud pulling itself out with its own strength, without attachment or obstruction to the five elements, passing through unobstructed. Speech knows that it transcends expression, captivating and inspiring faith in others like a child in a pottery singing a song. The mind realizes the meaning of primordial purity, original liberation, and without a basis for re-creation, like a person cured of measles, believing that they will not return to the three realms. As a sign of seeing the exhaustion of phenomena, the body purifies tangible things, like a corpse in a charnel ground, without fear or shame even if an executioner appears. Speech realizes that it is inexpressible, expression is exhausted, like an echo in a valley, completely disappearing, repeating the words of others. The mind is without grasping, thoughts are completely purified, like mist dissolving in the sky, able to attain Buddhahood in an instant. Furthermore, in the Root Tantra it says: Measure by the three abidings, dreams reversing and body, speech, and mind, signs and degrees are to be firmly grasped. Furthermore, it is necessary to know this: In brief, the meaning spoken in the tantra is: For some dull-witted people who grasp appearances as real, some who only look at the literal meaning and cannot deeply understand, if there appear situations such as being able to transform the body into various forms, appearing in various colors, a second image appearing in a shadow or mirror, or thinking they know the thoughts of others, then meditate on wrathful deities, recite fierce mantras and the Hum song, burn gugul incense, and use small and large amrita.
