Yoga of Meditation. Yoga of Meditation. Secondly, regarding the yoga of meditation, the view of that which is meditated upon being without meditation, the continuous presence of the mind and consciousness that meditates, and the methods of abiding, etc., are the essence of meditation. To continuously abide in samadhi that possesses this essence is called meditation. Differentiated, there are the meditation of skillful means, the meditation of wisdom, and the meditation of the inseparability of skillful means and wisdom. The former includes limitless methods such as tummo and the path of skillful means. Here, the meaning of the above view, which is the union of the expanse of awareness, skillful means and wisdom, the state of emptiness and clarity without grasping, is to single-pointedly abide in equanimity, without laziness intervening, and is therefore called the meditation of union day and night. The way to practice this is to divide it into sessions, without laziness or idleness, generating bodhicitta at the beginning of each session, without object or distraction during the actual session, and sealing it with dedication at the end. In short, to practice the view of remaining unwavering from that equanimity, clarity and emptiness without grasping, and in the post-meditation period, to practice it like a dream or illusion. As it says in the tantra: "The essence of meditation is skillful means; that which is meditated upon and that which meditates are the meditation of skillful means." And: "The definition of meditation is because of abiding." And: "The meditation of union of skillful means, the meditation of wisdom itself, the meditation of the inseparability of skillful means and wisdom, this is the most profound of meditations." And: "That view itself is called meditation in reality; because day and night are spent with dharma, therefore meditate in union." And: "Having abandoned laziness and idleness, constantly abide in meditation." And: "Emptiness and clarity, duality of mind, are free from meditation; it is the most supreme of all meditations." Thus it is said. Yoga of Meditation.
