Establishing the Nature of Things. Establishing the Nature of Things. Thoroughly Investigating Thoughts. Second, establishing the nature of things. In the "After-Death Guide," it says: First, thoroughly investigate thoughts; in the middle, seek the flaws of the mind; then, examine the three places of origin, dwelling, and destination. As it is said, among the three, the first is to thoroughly investigate thoughts: Who is the one who initially experiences pleasure and pain, the agent of negation and affirmation, good and bad? Who is the one who, being deluded, wanders in samsara through successive rebirths, and who, being liberated, attains Buddhahood? Are the three doors of body, speech, and mind gathered together as one, or are they separate? By whom are they done? Through examination and analysis, it is determined that the chief root of all is thought alone, just as recognizing a thief. As it says in "Vast Expanse of Clarity": The single basis of all samsara and nirvana. And in "Secret Essence Tantra": The very nature of mind, without a basis, is the root of all phenomena. As it is said, similarly in the Dohas, it is also said: Mind itself is the single seed of all, from which arises existence and the passing beyond sorrow. And so on, the meaning is the same. Seeking the Flaws of the Mind. Second, seeking the flaws of the mind: Are the body and speech related to the mind, and the mind that grasps at "I" and "you," and the self, these three, one or different? If they are one, then like the body and speech, the mind should also be seen and heard. Or, like the mind, the body and speech should not be seen and heard. If they are not like that but different, then what is the single meaning of the pleasure and pain of the three doors? Having examined this, the body is indivisible particles, speech is unspoken and self-vanished, and the mind, like a bird flying through the sky without leaving a trace, has disappeared. After that, neither one nor different can be established, as an example. By separately examining objects and subjects, arising and ceasing, existence and non-existence, affirmation and negation, permanence and annihilation, etc., it is revealed that everything transcends the mind and that there are no flaws that are established separately from the creation of the mind. It is nothing at all, and the clear awareness that has not fallen into any side, the very nature that has truly transcended the object of expression. Knowing that the signs of delusion and liberation are pure from the beginning. As it says in "String of Pearls": In the primordial purity of the very beginning, to say "delusion" is just to say it, and what is it that is not deluded? Therefore, delusion is pure from the beginning. As it is said. Examining the Three Places of Origin, Dwelling, and Destination. Third, examining the three places of origin, dwelling, and destination: Like this, the meaningless "I" and "self."

Even if one merely realizes that the object and function of this mind that clings to "I" are unestablished and without inherent existence, still, in the manner of looking at oneself, one investigates and analyzes: "From where and how did the essence of this mind-awareness first arise? Where and how does it abide in the middle? Where and how does it go and cease in the end?" By investigating and analyzing, none of these are established anywhere. When the antidote of the observer arrives, the object of observation, emptiness of inherent existence, vanishes completely. This awareness of the observer, which cannot be pointed out, the essence of individual self-awareness, spontaneously arises as primordial pure and spontaneously accomplished wisdom. At that time, where is the going or abiding? By looking at its essence, the unobstructed self-power of awareness, free from knower and known, is naturally cultivated, thereby realizing the state of primordial emptiness, the original purity. As it says in 'Liberation from Bondage': 'All inner and outer investigations are liberated into primordial emptiness.' And: 'If all the basis is known to be perfectly pure, then the meaning of the basis is manifestly liberated in its own place.' Here, the understanding that the essence is inseparable from identification, the naked awareness-emptiness, without trace or attachment, is also the same meaning. If one thinks that the investigation of the three places of arising, abiding, and going is a repetition of what has already appeared in the uncommon preliminaries, it is not so. Because the previous investigation was of the object, thereby establishing that it is unestablished; while here, it is an investigation of the subject, thereby settling on the essence. This is the view of Omniscient Longchenpa. The former is the method of establishing that the mind has no basis or root, and the latter is the teaching of settling the meaning of what has fallen into the state of equality, which is the view of Minling Terchen father and son. These are the stages of guidance for generating what has not arisen, and they are the methods for determining the true nature of reality.
