The characteristics of a disciple to be accepted. The characteristics of a disciple to be accepted. To be accepted, as it says in 'Self-Arisen Wisdom': Great is the power of faith and diligence. Great is wisdom, and there is no attachment. Great is compassion, and one practices secret mantra. Without conceptualization, the mind is without distraction. Possessing vows and diligent in practice. And as it says in 'Vast Expanse of Clarity': Possessing faith, compassion, and generosity. Subdued in nature, abstaining from sin, sharp in faculties. Able to keep secrets, great in practice and asceticism. Great in renunciation, endurance, and perseverance. This is a vessel for the secret of secret mantra. This drop of nectar, the essence of the heart. Should be shown to the supreme son of a son. That is: pure faith that delights in the lama and the instructions, the faith of desiring to seek meaning and be extremely devoted, the faith of believing without doubt, the ultimate and irreversible faith that cannot be changed by circumstances. Because one possesses the complete cause for blessings to enter, one is endowed with fearless mental strength. Without procrastination or laziness, the commitment to diligence is firm. By understanding the meaning of words, one cuts off the wrong paths to the meaning of profound reality. By abandoning attachment and clinging, one does not engage the mind in the activities of samsara. Serving the three doors with one-pointed attention. By cutting off the bonds of doubt, one enters the practice of profound secret mantra. Without ordinary wrong thoughts, one does not fear the practice of mantra. With little distraction, one shows the pace of the three doors. With pure vows, faults do not arise. Without weariness or laziness, realization is easily born. Possessing pure perception and devotion, without partiality. With compassion, cherishing all beings and having great altruistic intention. Generous in accumulating merit. Without wildness or carelessness, and peaceful and subdued. Greatly cautious of sinful actions. Able to distinguish between dharma and non-dharma. Never separating from practice and without degenerating conduct. Having little interest in worldly affairs. Enduring hardship in difficult practice and having great perseverance in dharma, these are those with good karma and fortune, supreme vessels of secret mantra, endowed with characteristics, and therefore worthy of receiving empowerment and instructions. Therefore, giving instructions to such a supreme son of the lineage increases qualities, and not giving them becomes a fault. As it says in 'Vast Expanse of Clarity': Suitable as a vessel for the essence of secret mantra. Supreme great being who guides beings.

From "The Vessel and Timing of the Heart Essence," it says: If this (teaching) is not shown to the place of giving, the profound Dharma treasure will disappear. When the time is ripe, if you do not show it yourself, the benefit of beings will be interrupted, and a downfall will befall you. Thus it is said. Moreover, it is not just once, but after giving empowerment and guidance, give the instructions gradually, and when one has faith in the appearance of the light of wisdom and can vow and promise to practice, it must also be given completely. Likewise, it says in that very text: After the empowerment and guidance are complete, between years and months, do not give it all at once, but give it in stages. When the student has mastered the bindu itself, if he can take an oath to practice, then give it completely. Thus it is said. The characteristics of a disciple to be accepted.
