Characteristics of a Disciple to be Abandoned. Characteristics of a Disciple to be Abandoned. Fourth, regarding the characteristics of a disciple, there are two aspects: what to abandon and what to accept. What to abandon is, as stated in "Self-Arisen": "A disciple who lacks the proper vessel is one who is of little wisdom, flattering, and arrogant. Eloquent in speech but stingy in action, greatly deceitful and cunning. One who disregards the guru's words, disputes the repayment of kindness. Does not see virtues but finds faults. With a bad lineage and nature, despises kindness and praises oneself. Whose vows and commitments are practiced improperly. One who does not examine the disciple and sees the guru as an enemy. To a person who does not practice, the empowerment of the Great Perfection, and its meaning and instructions, should not be taught." This means someone who is of little wisdom and ungrateful, superficially flattering and eloquent, praising in person but slandering behind their back, eloquent but stingy, hypocritical and cunning, disrespectful of the guru's teachings and disobedient to advice, not seeing virtues but finding faults, repaying kindness with harm, delighting in gossip and discord, praising oneself and arguing about merits, filled with anger and stinginess, not abiding by vows and commitments, and whose practice and conduct are improper, with a bad lineage and behavior, repulsive to see and annoying to be around. Such individuals are not vessels for the empowerment and instructions of the Great Perfection, so they should not be given to them. Even if given, it is of no benefit; instead, they become arrogant and conceited, becoming the cause of wrong views and non-virtue. The instructions become impure, the blessings diminish, and ultimately they fall into the lower realms. As it says in "Space of Clarity": "Moreover, this essence of the essential point, if poured into a bad vessel, the vessel breaks, the essence spills, and one falls into hell." That is how it is.
