The Three Natures Determinedly Shown. Vasubandhu. The Three Natures Determinedly Shown. Vasubandhu. In Sanskrit: Trisvabhāvanirdeśa. In Tibetan: The Three Natures Determinedly Shown. Homage to the Bhagavan, Lord of the World. The imputed, the other-powered, and the thoroughly established nature itself, these three natures of the steadfast ones, are intended to be known as profound. By the power of conditions it engages, and because it is merely an object of imputation, whatever appears is other-powered, and however it appears, all that is imputed. Whatever appears, how it appears, whatever is not constant, that which is called unchanging, is the thoroughly established nature. Whatever appears of those is all imputed, how it appears is both. Whatever is absent in that, that itself is the non-dual dharma of that. Because what is imputed is absent in that, and how its meaning is imputed, since it is thus utterly absent, mind is called the all-discerning. By means of the entities of cause and effect, that mind is considered to be of two kinds. The base of all, called the consciousness, and the engaging, called the seven consciousnesses. The first is the seed of all defilements, it is called mind because it accumulates habitual tendencies. The second is expressed because it engages in various forms. That which is not truly all-discerning, ripening and likewise, the distinctions of appearing as holding and increasing differently, are also considered as three kinds. The first is the nature of ripening, this is the root consciousness. The other is the consciousness of engaging, it engages by perceiving the object to be seen and the agent of seeing. Two and one, existing and non-existing, completely defiled and utterly purified, by thoroughly distinguishing them by their characteristics, the natures are considered profound. Whatever is grasped as existing, that itself is utterly non-existent, therefore it is the imputed nature, it is considered the characteristic of existing and non-existing. Existing in the nature of delusion, and non-existing as it appears, therefore that other-powered also, is considered the characteristic of existing and non-existing. Because both are non-existent, and existing in non-duality, therefore the thoroughly established nature, is considered the characteristic of existing and non-existing. The two aspects of the meaning of imputation, existing and non-existing are one in essence. Therefore, children consider the imputed nature, to be the nature of two and one. The two of the aspect of appearance.
