The Fourth Chapter: Explaining the Various Emptinesses of Mind The Fourth Chapter: Explaining the Various Emptinesses of Mind There are three aspects to the various emptinesses of mind: the faults of not realizing the various emptinesses of mind, emptiness from ordinary people, and emptiness from yogis. To show the faults of not realizing the various emptinesses of mind, it is said, "Self-nature." Self-nature refers to objects such as form appearing as graspable. The first is the consciousness of the eye and so on, because the name of the basis is attributed to what depends on it. That appears as the grasper. But the essence of what appears as the grasped and the grasper is empty and peaceful. If one does not understand it as such, then the grasped and the grasper arise from one's own conceptual thoughts, and thus manifest as a great mass of suffering, clinging to "my body, my speech, my mind" as self, and from this self-clinging, performing virtuous and non-virtuous deeds, experiencing their ripening results, abandoning the aggregates in the process of merging into clear light, being thrown by the wind element and becoming what is called the "intermediate state," taking bodies in the five realms from one place to another through the union of sperm and blood, and experiencing the suffering of samsara. Regarding this, the Uttaratantra states: "Not knowing such self-nature, Those covered by the darkness of ignorance, Having done virtuous and non-virtuous deeds, Will wander in the five realms. Having committed the five heinous crimes and so on, They will be tormented in the hells and so on. Having done virtuous deeds such as giving, They will be purified in the heavens and so on. Limitless thousands of births, They will obtain again and again. This is the ripening of past actions, The deluded ones grieve for this." This is what was said. To show emptiness from ordinary people, it is said, "Precious," because if one knows the emptiness of mind, it becomes the cause for the arising of the precious wisdom of the Buddhas, therefore mind is called precious. Regarding this, the Adhyardhasatika Prajnaparamita Sutra states: "Mind is the cause for the arising of wisdom, Do not seek the Buddha elsewhere!" This is what was said. So, what is the nature of that mind like? It is merely self-awareness, devoid of all characteristics, without an object of focus. Regarding this, the Maharatnakuta Sutra states: "Light-protected, if one searches everywhere for the mind, it cannot be found, it cannot be found.
