Chapter One: Severing Doubts from the Condensed Practice. Chapter One: Severing Doubts from the Condensed Practice. In Sanskrit: Caryamelapanapradipaṃ. In Tibetan: The Lamp of Condensed Practice. Homage to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Manjushri Wisdom Sattva! Homage to the unreal, pure, and equal to space! Homage to the complete, wordless, and devoid of letters! Homage to the past and the unarrived, pervading all! Homage to the all-pervading, complete, and empty! In this Vajrayana, the practice through the door of mantra is twofold: extremely focusing on the guru's mantra and extremely focusing on the inner self. In order for those who have reached the other shore of hearing to be able to guide all sentient beings, and in order to clearly explain the words of the teachings that are truly spoken from the Sutras, Tantras, and Realizations, from numerous pleasant and vast words, referring to verses and single sentences, etc., which are beautiful phrases, and extracting from the authentic Tantras of interwoven and highly interwoven texts, in order for children to understand, like a lamp illuminating the branches of the method of practice, it has happened in the past, and this is not without reason. Why is that? In the ages of complete fulfillment, three fulfillments, and two fulfillments, worldly people were full of life and health, complete with generosity and the practice of morality, etc., endowed with complete qualities, abiding in the treatises and fully seeking, thereby entering into the knowledge of Suchness, and vast words, etc., through beautiful phrases to show Suchness, and they also understood. Now is the age of strife, worldly people have less life and health, and complete fulfillment is diminished, full of deceit, illusion, and arrogance, and endowed with jealousy, with weak intelligence and wrong views, delighting in evil deeds, etc., therefore they do not truly like the meaning of vast words, etc., beautiful phrases, so they do not seek Suchness. Therefore, abandoning the complete seeking of the initial treatises, they cannot realize Suchness, and focusing on virtuous and non-virtuous actions, they waste time.

Now begins the translation. Therefore, it would become unnecessary for those who wish to attain liberation, because the sounds that dwell in the gateway of words, such as pleasant and extensive words, are like boats. The Blessed One also said that one should follow the meaning, not just the literal words. Having seen the importance of this meaning, from the instructions of my teacher Nagarjuna, having attained the samadhi of the completion stage through the generation stage, in order to clearly explain the five stages of suchness—the suchness of mantra, the suchness of mudra, the suchness of self, the suchness of dharma, and the suchness of deities—through the gateway of words commonly taught to both created and uncreated disciples, I shall explain by mixing sutras, tantras, and treatises. The Blessed One said in all the scriptures that explain sutras and so on, "Even in billions of kalpas, without it, there will be no accomplishment." As it is said in the Great Yoga Tantra called "The Four Goddesses Asking the Blessed One": "Among the eighty-four thousand aggregates of the Great Hero's teachings, whoever does not know it, all of that is fruitless." Therefore, the vajra disciple asked, "If one does not know suchness, will one not become enlightened?" The Blessed One said, "Yes." Then, please listen to the self-nature of suchness from the perspective of the sutras. Because Mahayana practitioners and logicians, etc., all abide in this meaning and realize suchness in various ways, in order to gather them, please, Blessed One, explain what this so-called suchness is. The Vajra Acharya said, "Whatever is true, that is suchness." Asked, "Blessed One, what is the so-called truth like?" Answered, "What is called non-deceptive, that is called truth." Asked, "What is the so-called non-deceptive like?" Answered, "The samadhi that has the nature of extreme truth, that is called non-deceptive." Asked, "The nature of the nature of truth

What is the Samadhi "having..."? Answer: That which has the characteristic of the two truths being non-dual is the Samadhi that has the nature of true reality. Question: Blessed One, what are the "two truths"? Answer: The first is the conventional truth, and the second is the ultimate truth. Question: Blessed One, what are the characteristics of the two truths? The Vajra Master said: The Blessed One taught in the Vajra Pinnacle Tantra: Vajrapani asked: Blessed One, what is the ultimate truth, the place of all dharmas? The Blessed One said: Secret Lord, all dharmas are the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, and those that go and move and do not go. Since they abide in the ultimate truth, the ultimate truth in the manner of non-abiding is selflessness, unconquerable, all empty, without increase, without decrease, completely pure, equal to space, and the very nature of being without defilement, without letters, without words, separated from body, speech, and mind, is not existent, is not non-existent, does not go, does not not go, is not far, is not near, is not empty, is not non-empty, and is not even the Middle Way. This is the ultimate truth. Therefore, it is supremely profound, difficult to enter, without birth, and without cessation. What arises from causes and conditions is the conventional truth. It is the Samadhi like an illusion, endowed with appearances like dreams, magic tricks, and reflections. That which becomes the cause of the four Brahma abodes by its own characteristics is the conventional truth. The order in which these two are joined and integrated is the Samadhi that has the nature of true reality. That which is the complete pacification of all objects of focus is called Suchness. The Vajra disciple asked: Ordinary people like us, from beginningless time, are attached to various external objects, thinking of existence and non-existence, one and many, two and neither two, neither existent nor non-existent, permanent and impermanent, and so on.
