Explanation of the Twenty-sixth Chapter Explanation of the Twenty-sixth Chapter ༄། Now, in order to clarify the nature of time, "Thereafter" and so on are spoken. "Offering" refers to offerings such as dance and so on. "Upper and lower wheels" refers to the wheel of breath. "Those" refers to the breaths. "The number of times is spoken as it is." Among them, "time" refers to closing the eyes and so on. "The difference of movement" refers to the difference of time ༄། appearing. "The counting of time is without body," where "time" refers to all states of things. "Counting" refers to the difference of states, namely birth, dwelling, and death. "Without body" means that they are different from embodied beings because they are imperceptible to the eyes and so on. Alternatively, "counting" is all the states of things, and "time" refers to impermanence itself, that is, it will die. It is also said that: "Even if hundreds of arrows are struck, death cannot be avoided when the time comes. Even a light touch of a blade of grass, when the time comes, one will surely die." The so-called arrival of time is also because the favorable conditions for dwelling are exhausted and the unfavorable conditions are near. The proximity of unfavorable conditions also harms the favorable causes, but in reality, it should be known that death is due to the exhaustion of causes. It is also said that: "Death due to the exhaustion of causes is called exhaustion. How can one speak of the exhaustion of what is not exhausted by nature?" Among them, favorable causes refer to suitable food and so on. Unfavorable close conditions refer to disturbances of internal and external diseases such as wind, bile, phlegm, and accumulation, as well as the efforts of oneself and others to destroy life. Among them, one's own efforts refer to obstruction, jumping into fire and water, eating poison, and so on. The efforts of others refer to the harm of sentient beings such as tigers and snakes, and being destroyed by external weapons and so on. They harm the proximate cause of taking up life, and it should be known that death is like a lamp extinguished when the oil is exhausted. The so-called death refers to the

This is to show impermanence, because it shows that it pervades all compounded things. As it is said, "In all places, all exist." Like the sky pervades, it exists in all times. As it is said, "Pervading all things." This is pervading all substances. For example, trees and vases, etc., arise, and after arising, it is also evident that their continuation is impermanent and destructive. For those things whose beginning and end are not clearly seen, such as the sun and the moon, it should also be inferred that they are impermanent from the particularity of reasoning such as appearing and disappearing. Then, what about those who possess a vajra body? That is not a subject because it is well known in the world. Or, since momentary impermanence pervades even a vajra-like body, it is difficult for all things to transcend time. Therefore, the Blessed One, in the teachings on time, showed that all things cannot transcend time. As it is said, "The arising of time matures, beings are gathered by time, time awakens those who sleep, time is difficult to transcend." If someone says that this comes from the treatises of other schools, there is no fault in that either, because the outsiders are mistaken in clinging to characteristics such as being different from time and being permanent. It is not a mistake to merely talk about time. Thus it is said, "Clinging to things with attachment, and clinging with a pure mind, are like a wife embracing with love, and a daughter embracing with affection." As it is said, "Even though it dwells in the body, the body does not arise." In that way, even though it pervades sentient beings, since it is adventitious in the ultimate truth, the body itself is without self-nature. Therefore, as it is said, "Time itself has no time, the world itself is not the world." Among these, time is what is shown, the world is what is explained, and destruction is the ultimate result of impermanence such as birth. Dependence is reliance on conditions, and if these are analyzed, since they have no self-nature, they should be understood like the moon in water, neither completely true nor completely false. God, you have said before.
