《The Definitive Meaning of Mani》 Homage to Avalokiteśvara! Mani (Sanskrit: मणि, maṇi, wish-fulfilling jewel): This is the wish-fulfilling jewel, the method of compassion without object, great bliss. Lotus (Sanskrit: पद्म, padma): Great wisdom of emptiness, abiding in you, I prostrate. When the letter Vam dissolves into the letter E, and the letter Hum dissolves into the letter Ah, and the wish-fulfilling jewel abides on the lotus, I take refuge in Avalokiteśvara. As time and samsara-nirvana are inseparable, as He and Vajra are inseparable, as the wish-fulfilling jewel and the lotus are inseparable, I prostrate and bow to Avalokiteśvara. As method and wisdom are inseparable, as great bliss and emptiness are inseparable, as emptiness and compassion are inseparable, I prostrate to the wish-fulfilling jewel. As the deity and the mandala are inseparable, as the support and the supported are inseparable, as the principal deity and the consort are inseparable, I prostrate to the wish-fulfilling jewel. As the knower and the known are inseparable, as samsara and nirvana are inseparable, as the two truths and the four truths are inseparable, I prostrate to the wish-fulfilling jewel. All dharmas are the basis of emptiness, the nature of reality is free from all elaborations, the mind of enlightenment, the father and mother tantras, method and wisdom are inseparable, I prostrate to the wish-fulfilling jewel. All Buddhas attain Buddhahood through this, the Tathagata who is primordially liberated, the primordial Buddha without lineage, I prostrate to the wish-fulfilling jewel. Without the two selves, the basis of emptiness, suchness itself, the self of goodness, the self of the all-pervading five wisdoms, I prostrate to the wish-fulfilling jewel. The great mind of all sentient beings, the great life of all living beings, the essence of the Sugata, the Dharmakaya, I prostrate to the wish-fulfilling jewel. For those with defilements, it is the nature of the basis, for those without defilements, it is the nature of the result, the inseparable universal ground, the wisdom body, I prostrate to the wish-fulfilling jewel. Like the cloudless great cloud realm, the sky pervades, thus in all of samsara and nirvana, the eternally abiding wish-fulfilling jewel, I prostrate. Neither existent nor non-existent, neither permanent nor impermanent, the supreme Middle Way that abandons the two extremes, I prostrate to the wish-fulfilling jewel. Neither existent nor non-existent, free from the extremes of exaggeration and denigration, the wish-fulfilling jewel that has become the three kayas, I prostrate. The qualities of the Dharmakaya, such as the powers, are like the number of grains of sand in the Ganges, the four kayas and five wisdoms that have transcended, I prostrate to the wish-fulfilling jewel.

The sole vehicle, the sole body, The sole bliss, the sole refuge, Without contradiction, without flaw, without compare, I prostrate to the Jewel Lotus! Holding the great wish-fulfilling jewel, The wish-granting tree grows luxuriantly, The supreme, excellent vase, I prostrate to the Jewel Lotus! The source from which all needs arise, The great jewel, the precious crest, The supreme perfection of wisdom, I prostrate to the Jewel Lotus! Fulfilling the hopes of beings as desired, The great jewel, radiant with splendor, The glorious Buddha, lotus-born, I prostrate to the Jewel Lotus! The great essence of all Buddhas, Holding the nature of all Buddhas, The single teaching of all Buddhas, I prostrate to the Jewel Lotus! The lord of all worldly powerful ones, The king of all Vajradharas, The supreme master of all tantras, I prostrate to the Jewel Lotus! The Tathagata with a body of wisdom, Holding all wisdoms without exception, The flame of wisdom, brilliantly clear, I prostrate to the Jewel Lotus! This was prayed for by Lama Sherab Gyaltsen for the benefit of all sentient beings such as Thunpa Yönchö, and was written in accordance with the definitive meaning after understanding the meaning of Mani and Padma and gaining faith. May it benefit all sentient beings! (The original is only the Dzamtang printing house version.)
