The Complete Works of Dokpupa Sherab Gyaltsen JDol23, 'Explanation of the Nine Accomplishments, Like an Excellent Old Turquoise' Explanation of the Nine Accomplishments, Like an Excellent Old Turquoise Explanation of the Nine Accomplishments, Like an Excellent Old Turquoise Regarding the explanations of all the profound Prajnaparamita (sher phyin) such as the Extensive, Medium, and Concise Mother Sutras, in the great 'Subduing Objections' treatise, what are the differences between terms like 'Suchness' (de bzhin nyid) and 'Unmistaken Suchness' (ma nor ba de bzhin nyid)? Answer: They differ due to the different applications of 'Accomplishment' (yongs su grub pa). Here, 'Accomplishment' has nine characteristics: Accomplishment without fear, accomplishment without inversion, accomplishment without change, accomplishment of self-nature, accomplishment of being the cause of all purified dharmas, accomplishment at all times, accomplishment without regression, accomplishment as only that, and accomplishment beyond the path of conceptualization. Accomplishment without fear is referred to as 'Suchness' (de bzhin nyid), meaning it always remains as such and is without fear. Accomplishment without inversion is referred to as 'Unmistaken Suchness' (ma nor ba de bzhin nyid), meaning it is without error or inversion. Accomplishment without change is referred to as 'Other-than Suchness' (gzhan yin pa de bzhin nyid), meaning it does not change into something else. Accomplishment of self-nature is referred to as 'Dharmata' (chos nyid), meaning the general characteristic of all dharmas is the self-nature of emptiness (stong pa nyid). Accomplishment of being the cause of all purified dharmas is referred to as 'Dharmadhatu' (chos kyi dbyings), meaning the ten powers (stobs bcu) and fearlessnesses (mi 'jigs pa), etc., are the element and cause of the Buddha's dharmas. The characteristic of accomplishment at all times is referred to as 'Dharma-abidingness' (chos gnas pa nyid), meaning whether the Tathagatas (de bzhin gshegs pa) appear or not, the dharmata of dharmas is abidingness. As it is said, because it abides at all times. Accomplishment without regression is referred to as 'Dharma without fault' (chos skyon med pa nyid), meaning from the first bhumi (sa dang po) onwards, having realized it through superior insight (rab tu rtogs pa), one enters into the faultless nature of reality, because one enters into the faultless nature of perfect and complete enlightenment (yang dag par rdzogs pa'i byang chub). Accomplishment as only that is referred to as 'Ultimate Reality' (yang dag pa'i mtha'), meaning reality. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is because it is the ultimate that cannot be reversed. The complete accomplishment that transcends the path of speculation is called the inconceivable realm.’ Because it is inexpressible and individually self-aware, it transcends the scope of all inferences. Furthermore, all imputed dharmas are like dreams, for those who have become fully realized. Therefore, that which does not change is called Suchness, because it is always thus. All dharmas are like illusions, because they appear as mistaken. The opposite of that is the Suchness of non-mistake, because it is the nature of non-error. All dharmas are like mirages, because they exist in one place but appear in another. The opposite of that is Suchness, which is not other, because it never changes to another at any time. All dharmas are like the moon in water, because they are not the nature of that dharma, but appear separately as the nature of that dharma. The moon in water is not the real moon. The opposite of that is Dharmata, because it is the nature of the ultimate dharma. All dharmas are like a Gandharva city, because they are meaningless. The opposite of that is the Dharmadhatu, because it is the cause of the Buddhas' dharmas and is meaningful. All dharmas are like lightning, because they are short-lived. The opposite of that is the abiding nature of dharma, because it is the characteristic of abiding. All dharmas are like letters seen by someone with impaired vision, because they are of an uncertain nature. The opposite of that is the faultlessness of dharma, because it is of a certain nature. All dharmas are like reflections, because they are manifestations of consciousness. The opposite of that is the ultimate truth, because it is the ultimate meaning. All dharmas are like emanations, because they arise from the mind. The opposite of that is the inconceivable realm, because it transcends all objects of the mind. Ultimately, all are aspects of the perfectly accomplished dharma.’ This was spoken by Asanga (དབྱིག་གཉེན།,Asanga,无著), the great Madhyamaka master, a direct disciple of Maitreya (རྒྱལ་བ་བྱམས་པ།,Maitreya,慈氏), like a second Buddha. If one does not understand these nine Sugatagarbha, one will not understand the ultimate definitive meaning of all the profound sutras and tantras. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
