Then, the Bhagavan, in the Nyagrodha Grove in Kapilavastu, dwelt together with a great Sangha of monks, a great assembly of Bodhisattvas, and a great assembly of sentient beings, teaching the Dharma. Then, Ananda, dwelling in solitude, focused inwardly and single-mindedly contemplated, thus directly realizing the Dharma. In the latter part of the night, the mouth-burning hungry ghost appeared before him and said: "O Ananda, tomorrow you will die and be born in the realm of hungry ghosts." Ananda said, "What means of reliance is there?" The hungry ghost said, "Ananda, if by noon you give food and drink equivalent to seven large Magadhan bowls to each of the hungry ghosts as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, and also satisfy a hundred thousand Brahmin sages, and make offerings to the Three Jewels in my name, then your life will be prolonged, and I too will die and transmigrate from the world of hungry ghosts to be born in the world of the gods." If you satisfy hundreds of thousands of Brahmin sages, then your life can be extended. After reporting this, the Blessed One, please tell me how I should practice. Then, the Blessed One, the Tathagata Shakyamuni Buddha, said to the Venerable Ananda: Ananda, do not be afraid, there is a way for you to satisfy the hungry ghosts and Brahmin sages. Ananda, there is a great powerful light Dharani called "All-Illuminating Mighty Light," just by giving with this, it can satisfy the hungry ghosts as many as the sands of the Ganges River, hundreds of millions of trillions. Give each hungry ghost and Brahmin sage seven Magadha country measuring units of food and drink. That is what I received from the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Free World and the Tathagata Free World Light when I was a Brahmin before. I used it to satisfy countless hungry ghosts and Brahmin sages with food and drink. All of them died from the world of hungry ghosts and were reborn in the heavens. Ananda, you should recite this mantra: ན་མཿསརྦ་ཏ་ཐཱ་ག་ཏ་ཨ་བ་ལོ་ཀི་ཏེ་ཨོཾ་སམྦྷ་ར་སམྦྷ་ར་ཧཱུྃ། (Tibetan: ན་མཿསརྦ་ཏ་ཐཱ་ག་ཏ་ཨ་བ་ལོ་ཀི་ཏེ་ཨོཾ་སམྦྷ་ར་སམྦྷ་ར་ཧཱུྃ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: नमः सर्व तथागत अवलोकिते ॐ सम्भर सम्भर हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: namaḥ sarva tathāgata avalokite oṃ sambhara sambhara hūṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: Homage to all Tathagatas, Avalokiteśvara, Om, fulfill, fulfill, Hum!) Ananda, recite this mantra seven times over the food offering for the hungry ghosts, then stretch out your hand and give it at the door. Also strike the cymbals. After doing this, as soon as you give, the hungry ghosts from all four directions, as many as the sands of the Ganges River, hundreds of millions of trillions, will be satisfied. Give each hungry ghost seven Magadha country measuring units of food. Just by eating these, they will die from the world of hungry ghosts and be reborn in the world of the gods. Ananda, you should always and constantly tell the monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen. By doing this, you will have an accumulation of merit, and your life will be extended. The Tathagata will have hundreds of millions of trillions of accumulations of merit. Non-humans will also often wander around.

By doing so, it will be as if one has satisfied the Brahmin sages with the food and drink of the gods, as many as the sands of the Ganges River, that is, countless trillions of sands. Those Brahmin sages will also be satisfied, and they will all utter the sound of "Om, may it be auspicious," and the minds of those beings will also be completely purified, and they will have the splendor of Brahmins. One will also always practice celibacy. The Tathagata will also have as many roots of virtue as the sands of the Ganges River, that is, countless trillions of sands.
