Once, the Bhagavan was in the great city of Vaishali, surrounded and attended by a great retinue. With the great Shravaka Shariputra and five hundred Bhikshus, and Maitreya and many other Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, surrounded and attended, the Bhagavan was seated on a prepared seat. In that assembly, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva named Samantabhadra arose from his seat, bared one shoulder, knelt with his right knee on the ground, bowed his head to the feet of the Bhagavan, and addressed the Bhagavan thus: "Bhagavan, the great vidya-mantra of the dharani called 'The Mother of Avalokiteshvara,' the basis of secret mantras, has been spoken in the past and is now spoken by the Buddhas, the Bhagavatans, who have appeared in the past, have not yet appeared, and are appearing now. The Transcendent, Perfectly Complete Buddha, named Limitless Light, still dwells, lives, and abides, and also teaches the Dharma. In that very assembly, there is a Brahmin named Powerful Light, who has attained the third bodhisattva ground. He proclaims, explains, and teaches this great vidya-mantra queen, the dharani called the Mother of Avalokiteshvara, to many hundreds of thousands of Brahmins and countless billions of beings. As soon as all of them hear this dharani, they are completely liberated from all sins that cause downfall, and they remember their past lives. I remember. Speak of that great bodhisattva! In the future, in all afflicted realms, beings will commit sins, commit unpardonable sins, and countless billions of sins will be exhausted. It will bring benefit and happiness, and become the protector of the unprotected. I also grant and rejoice. The Bhagavan said: Then, the bodhisattva mahasattva Samantabhadra spoke these roots of the secret mantra of the great vidya-mantra of the dharani called the Mother of Avalokiteshvara. 如果念诵三遍，七天之内将能见到普贤菩萨摩诃萨。如果以不散乱的心念诵，一个月内圣观自在将亲自显现大无明，也能见到圣无量光佛。将成为不退转于无上菩提。也能忆念前世，并能受持所闻。无论生于何处，都不会与正法分离。将获得巨大的受用。世尊如是宣说后，普贤菩萨摩诃萨和那些菩萨，以及那些比丘，和一切具足的眷属皆大欢喜，对世尊所说表示赞叹。《圣观自在母》陀罗尼圆满。印度堪布吉那弥扎和达那希拉，以及校正的译师班德·耶谢德翻译、校对，并以新术语修订后确定。《圣观自在观自在母》陀罗尼。

If recited three times, within seven days, one will be able to see the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Samantabhadra. If recited with a non-distracted mind, within a month, the Holy Avalokiteśvara will personally reveal the great ignorance, and one will also see the Holy Amitabha. One will become irreversible from the unsurpassed Bodhi. One will also remember past lives and be able to retain what is heard. Wherever one is born, one will not be separated from the true Dharma. One will obtain great enjoyment. After the Bhagavan spoke thus, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Samantabhadra and those Bodhisattvas, as well as those Bhikshus, and all the complete retinue rejoiced and praised what the Bhagavan had said. The Dharani called "The Mother of the Holy Avalokiteśvara" is complete. Translated and revised by the Indian Abbot Jinamitra and Danaśīla, and the reviser Bande Yeshede of Zhuchen, and also revised with new terminology and finalized.
