Then, Ananda was dwelling in solitude, focusing his mind inwardly and single-pointedly, realizing the Dharma directly. In the latter part of the night, the Burning-Mouth Female Hungry Ghost appeared before him and said: "Ananda, you will die tomorrow and be reborn in the realm of hungry ghosts." Ananda said: "Is there any way to rely on?" The hungry ghost woman said: "Ananda, if tomorrow you give food and drink equivalent to seven large Magadha measures to each of the countless hungry ghosts like the sands of the Ganges River, and also satisfy hundreds of thousands of Brahmin sages, and make offerings to the Three Jewels in my name, then your life can be extended, and I can also die from the world of hungry ghosts and be reborn in the world of the heavens." If you also satisfy hundreds of thousands of Brahmin sages, then your life will be prolonged. Please, Bhagavan, tell me how to accomplish this. Then, the Bhagavan, the Tathagata, Shakyamuni, said to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, do not be afraid, there is a way for you to satisfy the hungry ghosts and Brahmin sages. Ananda, there is a dharani called "All-Illuminating Powerful Light," and just by giving a little with it, it will satisfy as many hungry ghosts as there are sands in the Ganges River. Each hungry ghost and Brahmin sage will receive seven Magadhan measures of food and drink. That is because when I was a Brahmin in the past, I received this dharani from the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Lokeshvara and the Tathagata Lokeshvara Light. I used it to satisfy countless hungry ghosts and Brahmin sages, and they all died from the realm of hungry ghosts and were reborn in the realm of the gods. Ananda, you should memorize this mantra: Namaḥ sarva tathāgata avalokite. (Tibetan: ན་མཿསརྦ་ཏ་ཐཱ་ག་ཏ་ཨ་བ་ལོ་ཀི་ཏེ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: नमः सर्व तथागत अवलोकिते, Sanskrit Roman transliteration: namaḥ sarva tathāgata avalokite, Chinese literal meaning: Homage to all Tathagatas, Avalokite). Om sambhara sambhara hum. (Tibetan: ཨོཾ་སཾ་བྷ་ར་སཾ་བྷ་ར་ཧཱུཾ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: ओṃ संभर संभर हुं, Sanskrit Roman transliteration: oṃ saṃbhara saṃbhara hūṃ, Chinese literal meaning: Om, accumulate, accumulate, hum). Ananda, bless the torma for the hungry ghosts seven times with this mantra, then extend your arm and give it away at the door. Also, strike the cymbals. After doing this, as soon as you give it away, as many hungry ghosts as there are sands in the Ganges River from all four directions will be satisfied. Each hungry ghost will also receive seven Magadhan measures of food. After eating this food, they will die from the realm of hungry ghosts and be reborn among the gods. Ananda, you should always and continuously provide food for monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen. By doing this, you will possess a collection of merit, and your life will be prolonged. You will possess a collection of merit equal to hundreds of thousands of kotis of Tathagatas. Non-humans are always wandering

Bhūtas, flesh-eaters, pot-bellied ghosts, etc., as well as yakshas, rakshasas, demons, and pretas will not be able to see (this person). (This person) will also possess strength and diligence. If one wishes to satisfy the Brahmin sages, then one should recite seven times over offerings, alms, and filled vessels, and then give them in a place where there is flowing water. Having done so, the Brahmin sages will be satisfied with divine food and drink as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River. Those Brahmin sages will also have their senses satisfied, and they will all utter the sound "Om, may it be auspicious!" Those beings' minds will also be completely purified, and they will possess the splendor of a Brahmin. They will also constantly practice celibacy. They will also possess the roots of virtue of the Tathāgatas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River. All enemies will also be constantly destroyed. Recite twenty-one times over flowers, incense, fragrances, food, and drink, and then offer them to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Having done so, whether it be a son of good family, a daughter of good family, a bhikshu, a bhikshuni, or an upasika, they will have made offerings to the Buddhas, Dharma, and Sangha in the Buddha-fields of all the Tathāgatas of the ten directions with divine offerings and the supreme offerings of the Tathāgatas. They will be regarded as a guru, regarded as an image. All the Tathāgatas will remember and prophesy, and all the gods will also universally protect. Ananda, go and repeat (this Dharma) as well.
