Chapter Fifty: The Story of the Worm Chapter Fifty: The Story of the Worm Thus I have heard. At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling on Vulture Peak Mountain in Rajagriha. At that time, not far from the city, there was an unclean pond. Many people urinated and defecated there, and all unclean things were thrown there. In that pond, there was a large worm, like a snake, with four legs. It swam in the water, sometimes coming out, sometimes walking on the surface of the water. It lived there for many years, experiencing immeasurable suffering. At another time, the Blessed One, surrounded by many monks, walked ahead and came to that pond. Seeing the worm, he said, "Who among you knows the previous cause of this worm?" The monks thought, but no one knew what the worm had done before. They replied, "None of us know." The Blessed One said, "Listen carefully and keep it in mind, and I will tell you the previous cause of this worm. In the past, there was a Buddha named Vipashyin who descended into the world and entered nirvana for the benefit of sentient beings. In the teachings of that Buddha, there were ten thousand monks practicing brahmacharya, practicing completely purely. They lived on a mountain of monasteries, with flower trees and fruit trees blooming on the left and right, and springs and bathing ponds between the trees, a very pleasant place. At that time, the monks diligently practiced the precepts and worked hard in their practice, and all attained from the first fruit to the fourth fruit, and there were no ordinary people. At another time, about five hundred merchants went to the sea to collect jewels, and on the way they passed by that mountain. Seeing the monks diligently practicing, the merchants discussed making an offering, but because there were too many patrons, they did not find an opportunity. They prayed, saying, 'If we return safely and without obstacles, we will make offerings.' The Sangha remained silent, and the merchants set sail. Those merchants found many precious jewels in the ocean and returned safely. They offered a precious and excellent jewel to the Sangha as an object for alms. Then, the Sangha accepted the jewel and entrusted it to a monk in charge of affairs. Later, the Sangha became reliant on alms and thought to use the jewel for alms. So, they instructed the monk in charge of affairs to bring the jewel that the merchants had offered. The monk said, 'The merchants gave the jewel to me, not to all of you.' The Sangha said to the monk, 'The jewel was offered to the Sangha by the merchants, and you were only entrusted to keep it, not given it.' The monk became angry and said, 'Are you going to eat my excrement? The jewel is mine, don't say that.' Then, the Sangha, seeing that the monk was angry and had generated ill will, separated from each other. Thus, because of harboring ill will towards the Sangha and speaking evil words, the body was destroyed, and after death, they fell into the great hell of Avici, rolling in the filth of excrement for ninety-one kalpas. Having been liberated from that hell, they are now born in this pit of excrement. Although many years have passed, they have not yet been liberated. For example, the Buddha with the Ushnisha, who passed away in the past, also came here with the Sangha of monks and showed the attendants what had happened in the past. Then again, the Buddha Who Protects All also came here with the Sangha of monks and showed what had happened in the past. Then, after death, they were born again in the hell of sentient beings, and after countless tens of thousands of years, they were born again in this pit.
