Chapter Thirty-two: The Chapter on Seeking Good and Seeking Evil. Chapter Thirty-two: The Chapter on Seeking Good and Seeking Evil. Volume Nine: Thus have I heard. At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika's Garden. At that time, Devadatta, although ordained, was attached to gain and, through deeds of uninterrupted karma, pushed down a mountain to crush the Buddha, planted wooden splinters in his feet, released a mad elephant, caused dissension in the harmonious Sangha, and killed a Bhikkhuni who had exhausted her defilements. Having committed these unwholesome deeds, he feared the ripening of their consequences in future lives and went to inquire of the six heretical teachers. The six teachers also taught doctrines of evil views, saying that committing sins does not become sinful, and doing good does not become meritorious. He believed in them and severed his roots of virtue. At that time, Ananda, out of deep love for his brother, was very displeased and, weeping, pleaded with the Blessed One, saying: "Devadatta, this foolish one, has committed many sinful misdeeds, severed his roots of virtue, and is also disparaging the Shakya clan." The Blessed One told Ananda: "Devadatta has not only severed his roots of virtue in this life for the sake of gain and fame, but in the past he also performed deeds of abandoning body and life for the sake of gain and fame." At that, the monks were in doubt, and Ananda pleaded with the Blessed One, saying: "Devadatta also performed deeds of abandoning body and life for the sake of gain and fame in the past, how was that?" The Blessed One told Ananda: "Ananda, in the past, immeasurable, countless, inconceivable kalpas ago, in this Jambudvipa, in the land of... there was a Brahmin named Hayi. He took a wife from the same caste, and before long, his wife became pregnant. After nine months, she gave birth to a baby boy. Then, they held a grand birth celebration and named the boy 'Seeking Good,' and entrusted him to his mother.

The land regained its vitality. Then it became sentient again, becoming more fierce and violent than the previously soft and fertile land. After nine months, a boy was born. Like this, the mother also changed due to the karma of previous lives, and the son was named "Fault-Finder," and entrusted to the mother to raise. When the two brothers grew up, they went together to the sea to collect treasures. Each found five hundred attendants and friends, and then set off. Because the journey was long, before reaching the place of seven days' journey, the provisions ran out, and they were close to death. Good-Finder and the merchant friends were very distressed, all looking up to the sky and praying, and offering to the gods. Then in that desolate place, they saw a lush good tree from afar. Everyone came to the tree, and there was also a good well next to the tree. The merchants drank the water from the well and said, "This is a sign of our offering to the gods!" After saying this, the gods appeared and said, "Cut off the branches of that lush tree, and all wishes will be fulfilled." Then they cut off a branch, and delicious drinks appeared. Then they cut off another branch, and all kinds of food with a hundred flavors appeared, and everyone ate their fill. Then they cut off another branch, and all kinds of clothes appeared. Then they cut off another branch, and all kinds of precious jewels appeared, filling all the animal loads. Then Fault-Finder and everyone else came there, and saw that various precious jewels had appeared from the branches that had been cut off before, filling the animal loads, and thought, "If these people could get enough jewels from the branches, then if we dig out the roots of this tree, we can get even more jewels." Thinking like this, they planned to dig up the roots of the tree. Then Good-Finder was unhappy and said, "We were on the verge of death because of poverty, and this tree saved our lives, you must not cut this tree." But Fault-Finder did not listen to the advice and cut off the roots of the tree. Then Good-Finder didn't want to see it either, and left with the animal loads. Then five hundred Rakshasas appeared from the roots of the tree and ate Fault-Finder and all the merchants. Ananda, at that time that

At that time, the seeker of good was now me. His father was now my father, Śuddhodana. His mother was now my mother, Divine Beauty. The seeker of evil was now Devadatta. Ananda, Devadatta not only harms me now, but also harms me in all lifetimes for the sake of gain and fame. Although I have taught beneficial Dharma and done good, Devadatta still regards me as an enemy. After the Bhagavan spoke thus, the many attendants rejoiced and were exceedingly delighted. The thirty-second chapter, the chapter on the two seekers, good and evil, is complete. Thirty-second, the chapter on the two seekers, good and evil.
