Chapter Twenty-eight: The Golden Vase Chapter Twenty-eight: The Golden Vase Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's monastery, the garden of Prince Jeta. At that time, the monks had entered their respective summer retreats, and after emerging from the retreats, they arrived at the place where the Blessed One was. The Blessed One, having not seen these monks for a long time, felt loving-kindness towards them, and raised his hand adorned with a thousand-spoked wheel, and with an affectionate manner greeted the monks, saying, "Are you well? Are you not weary from alms-seeking?". The Thus-Gone One, endowed with great qualities, seeing that he was treating the monks with such affection, the venerable Ananda was greatly astonished, and thus addressed the Blessed One, "Blessed One, you are the lord of the world, possessing immeasurable qualities, and inconceivable wisdom, why do you condescend to treat the monks with such affection?". The Blessed One said to Ananda, "In the past, immeasurable, countless, inconceivable eons ago, in this Jambudvipa, in the country of..., there was a householder skilled in household affairs. He transformed all his wealth into gold, made a golden vase, and buried it underground. Similarly, he did not enjoy any of his wealth, but transformed it into gold, and after a long time, he accumulated seven golden vases, and buried them all underground. Later, this householder died from illness, and due to his attachment to the golden vases, he was reborn as a venomous snake, guarding the gold. Later, after a long time, that city was also destroyed, and no one lived there, and the city became desolate. That snake also lived for many years, and after dying, was reborn in the same body, and coiled around the golden vase, sleeping. Thus, after tens of thousands of years, in the last rebirth, it became weary of that body, and thought, 'Because of my attachment to this gold, I have suffered such an ugly body, now I should perform virtuous deeds.'

Thinking that it would be good to offer it to the field of ..., he went near the road, hid himself in the grass, thinking that if someone came, he would call him. At that time, that venomous snake saw a person coming from the road, and the snake called out to that person, and that person heard the sound of the call, and they looked at each other but saw nothing, so they went on the road and continued on, and the snake called out again: 'Alas! Please also come near to me here.' That person said: 'What are you calling me for? You are very vicious and will kill me.' The snake said: 'If I want to harm you, even if you don't come to me, I can harm you.' After saying that, the person fearfully approached the snake. The snake said: 'I have a golden vase here, can you be entrusted to do some merit for me? If you don't, I will harm you.' That person said: 'I can.' After saying that, the snake led that person to the golden vase, handed him a golden vase, and said this: 'You take this gold and prepare offerings and meals for the Sangha. On the day of preparing the offerings and meals, I will also come, please welcome me.' After that, that person took the gold and went into the Sangha, offered the gold to the attendant of the monks, and said: 'This is the gold of a venomous snake, please use this gold to prepare offerings and meals for the Sangha.' They prepared offerings and meals with this gold, and then calculated the date of the offerings or meals, and on that day, that person took a box and went to the place where the venomous snake was. That venomous snake also saw that person coming and became very happy. That person put the snake in the box and carried it away, and on the way he met a person, and that person asked: 'Where are you coming from?' He asked three times, but the person carrying the snake said nothing. The snake got angry and bared its fangs, but then thought: 'What fault does this person have? When someone asks three times, he doesn't even give a word in reply.' So he got angry again and bared his fangs, but then retracted them, and thought again: 'This person is doing good for me, I must repay his kindness.'

Thinking that if I also remember to repay the kindness, no malice will arise, I thought like this. Even if this person commits a fault in doing something beneficial to me, I must endure it. Thus, he went to a secluded place and said, "Put it down on the ground for a moment." Then the snake felt remorse towards that person and said, "Now I regret and confess my sins." He carried it again and went to the place of the Sangha. The Sangha had also reached the time for shade, so that person distributed flowers to the Sangha, and the snake watched the distribution of flowers with a devout heart. After that, the Sangha did the work of eating, washed their hands and feet, and taught the Dharma to the snake. The snake was very happy and offered six golden vases to the Sangha, performed virtuous deeds, and then passed away. After passing away, by the power of that virtue, he was born as a god of the Thirty-Three Heavens. Ananda, at that time, the person who carried the venomous snake was me. That venomous snake was Shariputra. In the past, he also carried a snake, and was scolded by the snake, and because of that, he also felt remorse. Now, he also feels remorse towards the monks. Ananda and others rejoiced at what the Buddha said and were very happy. The Twenty-eighth Chapter, The Golden Vase (ends). Twenty-eighth, The Chapter of the Golden Vase.
