Twenty-sixth Chapter: The Chapter of Śuddhodana-lakṣaṇa. Twenty-sixth Chapter: The Chapter of Śuddhodana-lakṣaṇa. Thus have I heard. At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the Bamboo Grove, the Kalandaka Ground, in the city of Rajagriha. Then, the Venerable Ananda rose from his seat, arranged his robe, knelt on the ground with his right knee, and, with palms joined, asked the Blessed One thus: "...These five monks, what is the cause? What is the reason that the Blessed One, immediately after turning the wheel of Dharma in the world, caused them to taste the nectar of the Dharma first?" The Blessed One said to Ananda: "These five monks, in the past, also ate my flesh and became happy, so here too they tasted the flavor of the Dharma first and became liberated." Ananda asked the Blessed One: "What did these five monks do in the past?" The Blessed One said to Ananda: "In the past, countless, innumerable, inconceivable eons ago, in this Jambudvipa, there was a king named Śuddhodana-lakṣaṇa, who ruled over eighty-four thousand small kingdoms of Jambudvipa. At that time, a fortune teller predicted that there would be no rain in that country for twelve years. When the king heard this, he was very sad and thought: 'If such a great famine occurs, how can so many people get food for so many years?' So he gathered all the kings and ministers of the small kingdoms, and after discussing, he calculated how much grain was in the granary and how many people there were now. Even if each person was given only one handful of grain each day, it would not be enough for twelve years, so he announced this matter. After that, the famine became more and more serious, and more and more people died. The king thought, 'How can I keep more people alive?' So he took the queen and the palace maids and went for a walk in the garden. After arriving at a secluded place, the queen and many people fell asleep. The king got up, bowed to the four directions, and made this vow: 'A famine has occurred in this country, and everyone has no food to

Then, because of hunger, I gave up this body and was reborn as a large fish in the next life. May all beings eat my flesh and feel satisfied. After making this aspiration, I climbed a tree and jumped off the tree, sacrificing myself. After passing away there, I transformed into a huge fish, five hundred yojanas in length. At that time, there were five carpenters in that place who were digging wooden stakes by the river. They saw the large fish. The fish spoke in human language, saying: If you are hungry, cut my flesh and eat as you please! After you are full, take home as much as you can carry! Because you ate my flesh and were satisfied before, in the future, after I become a Buddha, I will first let you taste the food of the Dharma. Tell all the villagers that all hungry people can freely take and eat my flesh! At that time, the five people cut the fish meat and ate it, and shared it with the villagers. Then, one person told another, and all the people of Jambudvipa gathered and cut the meat to eat. When one side of the ribs was about to be eaten, the other side of the ribs would automatically grow back. When the top was about to be eaten, the bottom would also grow in the same way. In this way, they took turns cutting and eating for twelve years, and everyone developed compassion for it. Those who ate the fish meat were all reborn in the heavens after their lives ended. Ananda, that king at that time is now me. The five carpenters who first cut my flesh and ate it were the first five monks. The many people who later ate my flesh were the eighty thousand sons of the gods and my liberated attendants. At that time, I first gave to those five people and saved their lives, so here I also first taught the Dharma, using the limbs of the Dharma body to extinguish the fire of the three poisons. Ananda and the many attendants rejoiced and accepted the words spoken by the Bhagavan. The twenty-sixth chapter, "Sudāna-karṇī," is complete. The twenty-sixth chapter, the "Sudāna-karṇī" chapter.
