Twenty-first, the chapter on the second of lineage. Twenty-first, the chapter on the second of lineage. Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika's Garden of Prince Jeta. At that time, in that country, there was a wealthy householder who had taken a wife from the same lineage, and because he had no son, he was very unhappy and prayed to all the gods. Later, the wife became pregnant, and after the months were complete, she gave birth to a boy. That boy was very beautiful and lovely, and the parents and relatives were all happy and held a birth celebration, gathering by a river to eat the birth feast. While eating the birth feast by the river, in order for everyone to see the boy, one person picked him up and gave him to another. In this way, as he was passed from one person to another, one person became careless, and the boy was lost and fell into the river and was carried away by the water. Due to the power of the boy's merit, his karma was not exhausted, and his life had not ended, so he was swallowed by a fish and remained alive in the fish's belly. At the end of that river, there was also a village, and in that village, there was also a wealthy householder who had no son. A servant of that householder was fishing by the river and caught a fish with a baby fish inside. He cut open the belly and a boy came out from the belly, and the servant took him and offered him to the mistress. The wife of the householder picked up the boy and looked at him, and the boy was handsome and possessed good marks. She was very happy and thought, "This must be a sign that we have prayed to all the gods." So she entrusted him to a wet nurse to raise him. At that time, the householder of the upper village heard that the householder of the lower village had found a boy in the belly of a fish. He thought, "This must be my son who fell into the river." So he went there and said, "This is my son, please give him back." The other said, "This is not your son. Because I have no son, I prayed to all the gods, and this is the son given to me by the gods. He was found in the belly of a fish." The two householders argued and went to the king to ask for a judgment. There, the boy's father said, "This is my son, who fell into the water by the river." The other householder said, "This boy is from the belly of the fish that I caught."

Saying, 'This is not your son.' The king, considering the situation of the two, decreed: 'This child shall be raised jointly by you two, and when he grows up, each of you shall take one of your son's wives. Whichever son is born from the two wives, take him separately.' Then, the two householders, as the king had decreed, jointly raised the child and did not quarrel at all. Later, when the child grew up, he said to his parents: 'As soon as I was born, I fell into the water, and was swallowed by a fish, etc., experiencing all kinds of suffering. But we did not die, so I have faith in becoming a renunciate, please allow me to do so.' The child's parents, because they loved their son very much, could not bear to refuse, and allowed him to become a renunciate. The child went to where the Buddha was, and upon arriving there, bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and said: 'I will become a renunciate in the Buddha's teachings.' To him, the Blessed One said: 'Welcome.' Having said this, his hair and beard fell off naturally, and he became a monk. He was also named 'Two Lineages'. The Blessed One preached the sacred Dharma to the monk Two Lineages, and he reached the end of suffering, and immediately became an Arhat. Then, the monks became doubtful, and the venerable Ananda asked the Blessed One: 'What good roots did this monk Two Lineages accumulate in the past, that even though he fell into the water and went into the belly of a fish, he did not die?' The Blessed One said to Ananda: 'Listen carefully. In the past, a Buddha named Vipashyin descended into the world and taught the Dharma to many people. At that time, a householder also came to that assembly, and having heard the Blessed One extensively teach about the merit of giving and the virtues of keeping the precepts, etc., he was very happy and pleased, and generated pure faith. He took the three trainings of not killing, etc., from that Buddha, and offered a single copper coin. By the power of that, wherever he was born, he was endowed with wealth and jewels, and became without poverty. Ananda, that householder at that time was him.'

This is the second type of Bhikshu. Because he offered a single copper coin to the Buddha, he possessed great wealth for ninety-one kalpas. In this present life, he also possesses wealth in his parents' home. Having taken the precept of not killing, he fell into the water and became food for the fish, but did not die. Because he took refuge in the Three Jewels, he met me and became an Arhat. At that time, Ananda and many attendants rejoiced in the teachings of the Blessed One and were exceedingly happy. The chapter on the Second Lineage, the twenty-first chapter, is complete. Twenty-first chapter, Lineage Second chapter.
